For nearly seven years, scientist Bruce E. Ivins and a small circle of fellow anthrax specialists at Fort Detrick's Army medical lab lived in a curious limbo: They served as occasional consultants for the FBI in the investigation of the deadly 2001 anthrax attacks, yet they were all potential suspects.
Over lunch in the bacteriology division, nervous scientists would share stories about their latest unpleasant encounters with the FBI and ponder whether they should hire criminal defense lawyers, according to one of Ivins's former supervisors. In tactics that the researchers considered heavy-handed and often threatening, they were interviewed and polygraphed as early as 2002, and reinterviewed numerous times. Their labs were searched, and their computers and equipment carted away.

Are you kidding? Is this "Merle Nass" the Dr. Meryle Nass, the woman whose Rhodesian anthrax paper in Red Flags Weekly was used -- via FAS's Rosenberg- to smear Hatfill and the woman who thinks the US sprayed Cuba with a substance that made Cubans go blind?
1993 : (NASS TRAVELS TO CUBA) By Meryl Nass, MD. ... "In 1993, I went to Cuba as a consultant to the Cuban Ministry of Health. ..." - Red Flags Weekly

1992 : (ANTHRAX ARTICLE BY MERYL NASS - See the groups PHYSICIANS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY & Institute for Molecular Medicine [affiliated with "Contaminated Veterans of America"], BARBARA HATCH ROSENBERG, AMERITHRAX, CUBA, HATFILL ) No one ever has provided any evidence showing that the Rhodesian army carried out anthrax attacks, much less that Hatfill participated in them. Kristof and company merely are regurgitating a tainted 1992 article by longtime Rosenberg associate Meryl Nass. The Nass report purported to explain the 1978-80 anthrax outbreak that affected 10,000 black farmers, predominantly with cutaneous anthrax, killing 182. In her "explanation," Nass leaped from one politically loaded speculation to another without any evidence.
The flamboyant, brilliant Hatfill earned his medical degree in Rhodesia in the late 1970s and early 1980s while serving in U.S. and Rhodesian special forces. In Rhodesia, he fought against communist guerrillas. One must recall that in Rhodesia now named Zimbabwe, and ruled since 1980 by genocidal communist Robert Mugabe the choice was never between apartheid and freedom, but rather between white or black apartheid.

Nice folks she hangs around with! I will not accept that the guy was her "friend" based on her word -- friends don't leak to the press about friends this way, certainly not that soon while the family is grieving. The bunch she hangs around with also claimed - very belatedly years later when it served their agenda- to be friends of a CIA guy who committed suicide after criticizing one of Clinton's CIA directors for being too PC.
Her associates wrote this:

Ratner's the spawn of the National lawyer's Guild & CCR and is embedded in the legal campaign to aid prisoners in Gitmo. His colleague is Lynne Stewart, the 1993 WTC bomb plot Blind Sheikh's lawyer who transmitted info on his behalf to Egyptian Islamic Jihad operatives for a terrorist strike, whose legal aid helped in the assassination of NA leader Ahmed Massood on Sept 9, 2001.
Schaap's a real hoot too.
Financial Times tells us the suicide was by an overdose of pain killer Tylenol. Google informs us that Tylenol is toxic at dosages above 4 grams/day, and doses as low as 10 grams have been lethal. But as a suicide method it takes a few days to have the effect, and the departure from this world is unlikely to be comfortable.
If private industry is so hawkish regarding trade secrets, I can only imagine what a DOD scientist has to endure. This story should do a real diservice to the recruiting efforts of our government research labs. It's a shame.
Thanks piasa for the background info.
I just go to the doctor's office and get a nubane shot or demeral shot. It's efficacy is much more bang for the buck and it saves your liver from all that tylenol. And really folks, if you're in a lot of difficult pain, you should be closely monitored by your doc. That's why they used to keep you in a hospital.

Her organization wants to open US weapons research facilities AND defensive bioresearch facilities to international inspection. Or shut them down, whichever comes first. Her group is royally POed that the US pulled out of one of those Bioweapons treaties when Bush was elected.
If they are sufficiently wacko- and I think we can as easily suspect that of them after Lynne Stewart became the Blind Sheik's facilitator - then is it possible that such people could work with a terrorist, domestic or otherwise, to create a bioweapons incident to further their agenda of opening up the labs or even get the Dems to shut them down? Nass's group from college was already involved in an effort to shut down a tritium processing facility I believe, or some missile project. Can't remember which but I've got their web page in here somewhere, maybe I can find it. It would somewhat explain why the targets would be Daschle and such.
But it could be the scientist wasn't a friend at all and the lefties are glomming onto him to cast more suspicion on US researchers in our the labs and get a "reform" effort going that might shut them down, and perhaps to get the FBI to stop digging before something more damaging to them turns up.
At least he didn't do the wrist-slitting thing like the UK bioterrorism expert Kelly. "Many dark actors playing games" and all.
Wow.
I stand corrected.
What are your thoughts about the possible involvement of Dr. Ivins?
It’s weird how the same small crew of people keep turning up.
OPINION-SPECULATION:
It could be the investigation went from a wide scope of focus to hone in on a tight (?) narrow scope of focus. Since we aren’t privy to the details...hard to know for sure.
well, we know where your kids get their brains from.
Tylenol?????? Gimme a break........
Fer sher.
Thank you.
“When a social worker (female) claims that a 62 year old male is a homicidal kook, I’d bet on the “kook” to be more stable than the BS credentialed “social worker”. When a Phd scientist works under top security conditions and has reached the age of 62, I think his motives in life have been long established. Put me in a group therapy session and I’d have some real fun too.”
A person I told this too had the same reaction, he could have been speaking sarcastically.
Especially when she presents it as being "against women" as she did. At least a 50% chance (and probably much higher) that she's the one with the issues -- issues with men who have issues.
Not getting much scrutiny is the discosure that her comments were added to his file in pen. Added by whom? Why in pen? An afterthought? Added when? After the fact?
She loses most of her credibility.
Remember the social worker who created that fiasco in Texas a few months back? The one who made anonymous calls claiming kiddie rape and incest within that religious group? It turned out to be the social worker who had the screw loose. The state spent a fortune and lost a great deal of credibility.
