PENCE RENEWS CALL FOR SPECIAL SESSION OF CONGRESS ON ENERGY Sends Letter to President

U.S. Congressman Mike Pence, sent a letter to President Bush today asking him to convene a special session of Congress to address the nation’s energy crisis. The Democrat majority adjourned the House for five weeks today.

“Today the Democrat majority of Congress adjourned for a five-week vacation without taking a vote on bipartisan measures that would lessen our dependence on foreign oil by allowing more domestic drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf.

“The American people won’t get a vacation from high gasoline prices, so Congress shouldn’t take a vacation until we vote to lessen our dependence on foreign oil.

“Since the Speaker has decided not to keep the House in session to allow this vote, I renew my call for President Bush to convene an immediate energy special session of Congress. Under Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution, the President has the power ‘on extraordinary occasions’ to convene the Congress.

“If $4 per gallon gas isn’t an extraordinary occasion that demands action by the Congress, I don’t know what is. The President should immediately bring the Congress back into session to do its job and give the bipartisan, pro-drilling majority a vote.

“The American people know the only way to lessen our dependence on foreign oil is to lessen our dependence on foreign oil – by giving the American people more access to American oil. I say to my countrymen and colleagues in Congress, ‘drill more, drill now, and we’ll pay less.’

“Mr. President, the Democrat Congress is leaving town for five weeks without voting on more drilling. Use your constitutional authority: bring ‘em back and make ‘em work! Right here, right now. The American people deserve no less.”

**UPDATE**

Congressman Pence and a group of other Republican lawmakers decided that there was still some work left to do before leaving town. While Speaker Pelosi and the rest of House Democrats decided to adjourn the Congress for a five-week recess, Congressman Pence rallied his Republican colleagues to continue speaking out about the direction this Congress needs to move in order to effectively address the energy crisis facing our country...even if the microphones, the lights and the cameras were all turned off!

I was sorely disappointed to see that Darryl Issa was not listed among the 25. I immediately wrote him and told him to get on the next flight to Washington and end this crisis.

If your congressman is not listed, then write, call, and insist that he or she get on the next plane and join these patriots.

This is a national security issue of the highest level. We are being held hostage by oil cartels and the only way to fight is to ensure that we have enough oil so that we can tell them to go pound sand (as if they have anything else to pound in those hell holes).

Nothing says the President couldn't call Congress back in for a State of the Union speech.

"He [The President] shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."
Article II, Sec. 3, U.S. Constitution

That would be a little less drastic than convening the house for a vote, but would get everyone back in DC. If the speech dealt with off-shore drilling and creating solutions, the point would be made to a national audience.

Who are these 25 guys?

Actually it was 50 and there have been lists posted on other threads. I call them the fierce 50:)It started with 5 guys and the rest came back when they heard what was going on. One rep(forget his name)got off his plane and came back rolling his luggage with him. You have the right idea, thousands of FReepers called yesterday when we had a live thread going on it, it was great.

Here is a link to the video of the presser they had after they left the floor

You forgot to add my guy, Todd Platts, to that list. He was on his way home to York yesterday, heard about what was going on (probably via Rush), turned around, returned to the House, and joined the revolt.

Screw China and screw the Olympics. Bush needs to keep his keister in Washington and call the Congress back into session to deal with the energy issue.

Priorities, dammit!

He could do that and imply the threat of convening an emergency session by saying “I don’t want to have to do that!”

I do not think President Bush’s trip to China is for the Olympics or for any kind of pleasure. I suspect it may have something to do with Iran. I do not need to cite what priority Iran may become in the near future. Nor do I need to speculate why top level communication with China would be necessary.

Pray for our President. He sounded terribly tired and distracted when he called Rush Limbaugh on Friday.

Remember when the Pubbies threatened to shut the government down.

Great rant, but if you mean the 1995 Gingrich budget, it was vetoed by Slick. The rats shut the government down, but the pubbies were blamed. By the time the media and popular culture were finished, blood was flowing from GOP ears.

The GOP learned a lesson not yet forgotten.

Hopefully the GOP keeps hammering away at this.
