Barack Obama said Friday that a windfall profits tax should be imposed on the oil industry to subsidize a $1,000 "emergency" rebate for consumers struggling with surging gas prices.
The rebates had already been announced as part of his tax relief proposal, but the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee said the release of a disappointing jobs report Friday called for the immediate adoption of the plan, which he said would provide a rebate that would be enough to offset the increased cost of gas for a working family over the next four months."
Obama and John McCain reacted to the latest unemployment numbers released Friday, which show the nation lost 51,000 jobs in June, by attacking each others proposed economic fixes.

The presumptive Republican nominee plugged his own jobs plan, and said Obamas proposal represented a return to failed economic policies. "Unlike Senator Obama, I do not believe that raising taxes is the answer to our economic problems, McCain said in a statement. There is no surer way to force jobs overseas than to raise taxes on businesses. The American people cannot afford economic policies that will take us backward."

Guaranteed higher prices... gas lines. Carter policy on steroids.
Guaranteed higher prices... gas lines. Carter policy on steroids.”
Fewer jobs-—less R & D-—no end in sight to price of all fuels.
Taking the money from the oil companies to give to the taxpayers is a different form of nationalizing.
What a scam. The windfalls profit tax will decrease supply and increase prices. Plus with gas demand and supply being inelastic the $1000 checks will results in higher prices defeating the purpose of it. Same reason McCain’s gas tax holiday is dumb economics.
Will Google, Microsoft and other rich corporations also being sending out $1,000 checks?
The problem is that Osama is on record as saying that he is just peachy with gasoline prices over $4.00 a gallon. So what is his solution after the $1,000 "rebate" is gone after four months and gas prices are still high because the Democrats won't drill?
hey osamaobama some of us are smart enough to figure out your math-for every $2000 we send to DC you’ll send $1000 back.
What a du mass.
But yesterday he told us that if we inflate our tires the world would be saved?!??!!!!
:p
They are not even masking their Socialist intentions for this country.
1. They would rather attack “Big Oil” than any Islamofacist.
2. They will destroy energy companies to get the public used to sratospheric gas and heating/cooling prices.
3. They will protect their large corporate sympathizers like Apple, Google, Microssoft.
4. They will gut our military to use the “saved” cash to buy votes.
5. They will promote the chimera of “alternative energy” and the big lie of climate change.
What does he call the tax on dividends?
How timely, coming just a day or so after the oil companies announced a sharp drop in profits in the recent quarter.
It’s a page right out of the hugo Chavez playbook. Hugo put on windfall oil profits to give to “the poor”. Result? Venezuelan oil production down 17% year over year, after a 14% drop the year prior. Taxes have caused neglect of oil infrastructure, etc., etc.
marxism 101: TAX IT! And as in New York State, when the people are bled white with taxes and the situation is still miserable, blame the Republicans.
what a chiseler! The rebate should be one million dollars for every one who makes less than $50,000 per annum. That’s the only way we’ll have happiness in this country!
Blatent robbery. The DimoPervs like to think they’re Robin Hoods, but that is just a guise for the fact that they are robbing hoods.
"There is only one logical question to be asked when addressing this policy: BY WHAT RIGHT?"
I'll see if I can google it up. It was an op-ed that appeared in the NY Times sometime in June 1972.
