Remedial education in college rarely works
July 31, 2008 | me

An NBER study discussed at http://insidehighered.com/news/2008/07/31/remedial finds that few students taking remedial courses in college every graduate. (For some reason the post bounced when I put this link in the "Source URL".)

Republicans need to make the case that sending everyone to college is not a panacea touted by Obama and many Democrats. Obama proposes at http://www.barackobama.com/issues/education/#higher-education to

"Create the American Opportunity Tax Credit: Obama will make college affordable for all Americans by creating a new American Opportunity Tax Credit. This universal and fully refundable credit will ensure that the first $4,000 of a college education is completely free for most Americans, and will cover two-thirds the cost of tuition at the average public college or university and make community college tuition completely free for most students. Obama will also ensure that the tax credit is available to families at the time of enrollment by using prior year's tax data to deliver the credit when tuition is due."

Gee! There is all kinds of money available for the so-called, minority, underprivileged as it is right now. WE, the tax payers, are paying through the nose for this as it is.

Why does there need to be more?

Oh! I know! The Obamas' were a part of the receipients of the largesse.

Obama will make college affordable for all Americans

The problem being that college is already affordable by all Americans, I had no money and my parents had zero support to offer - I was able to get through college just fine. Of course, I didn't go to Harvard like the Messiah did.

“...every graduate”? Looks like someone at NBER needs some remedial English. ha

Old Obama stole some dough,
E I E I E I OH.
He stole the dough from all of us,
E I E I E I OH.
With a buck buck here and a buck buck there.
Here a buck, there a buck.
Everywhere a buck buck.

This is Bravo Sierra. Did the annointed one never hear of the Hope Scholarship or the Lifetime Learning Credit programs that are available? Not to mention if you are low income, you qualilfy for Pell Grants that you do not have to pay back not to mention Student Loans.

If a child wants to go college, they can although they might be expected to actually have to pay back some of the costs.

My son is at private college in Chicago for his PhD and discovered that in the Junior Colleges of that corrupt city that Obama comes from, you cannot flunk a student even if they don’t show up for class — they must get their degree if enrolled.

That whole program in Chicago is morally bankrupt because nothing is expected of the student and they are handed a degree. The more students kept in the junior college, the more money they get.

Learned this while not only talking to my son but while talking to a recently retired head of Admissions at a private university. She said some of these students with the worthless degrees couldn’t even comprehend the application form and expected to get the same treatment at a private college.

Will take exception to remedial classes not leading to graduation. I know someone who scored a 28 on the Reading part of the ACT and a 17 on the Math. She had to take several remedial classes before taking the College Math course for credit. Her counselor suggested that she start at the beginning because she felt somewhere in her education she had missed something that could help. She started at the basic and went through the College Math with all A’s so whatever was missing was discovered. She graduated with no problem.

Obama keeps spending our tax dollars like they are his money to handout. He MUST be defeated!

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.Even though this is about college, it goes to show that the good education needs to happen BEFORE they get there.

It behooves all parents of children, no matter where they go, go get a well grounded education before they leave school, preferably junior high.

What I’ve noticed is that if they don’t have the basics down by then, there doesn’t seem to be much chance that they’ll get it later unless they’re really highly motivated.

I finally got it because I went through school through 8th grade three times after I graduated while I homeschooled each kid.

Some people just aren’t cut out for college. It’s a waste of time, money and effort to send them.

my wife taught remedial English in junior college...only there they had to call it “Developmental English” so it wouldn’t hurt anyone’s self esteem...those kids couldn’t write a simple declarative sentence...and a lot of them were smart asses to boot...they had an attitude of “I am the customer...you must please me....I paid for the course, I deserve a good grade”....fortunately, we sold our farm in 2005 at the peak and made enought dough so she could quit...but it was five years of hell teaching those mouthy dullards before we moved on.

.....and in an ironic twist, my wife had her PhD from George Washington....this is not uncommon BTW....junior colleges are loaded with highly educated teachers....my wife’s office mate had a doctorate from Emory and had written two books....so a real disconnect comes when you have highly motivated scholars teaching kids who disparaged classmates who made good grades in high school....they taunted them for “acting white”

It’s a shame nobody in the Department of Education has read “The Bell Curve”.

BTW, Charles Murray has a new book on education coming out in August.

Does this mean an end to the Pell grants?

The Pell grant program has been a great success. I personally know of several who have found a new, a productive life - good citizens - with the education they received with the Pell money.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The Liberal/Marxists who push tax credits and vouchers for college are the same people who vigorously ( and viciously) oppose vouchers and tax credits for K-12 schools?

Go figure! ( Scratching my head)

$4,000 can buy a **lot** of private K=12 education in my state.

If you do not want to be contacted **please** let me know, and I will remove your name.

I have included your name on the list because, in the past, you have posted to me about education issues. I surely don’t wish to bother you, but I don’t want you to miss these education articles, either.

I will call this ping list:

“The All Opinions Welcome Government Education Ping List” !

Government Education Ping List

For those who are interested in a full and open discussion about government education.

My kids enrolled in community college at the ages of 13, 12, and 13. Their first courses were non-credit English and algebra courses. They reported to me that most of the students in their classes were older, in their 30s, very serious, and working at full=time jobs.

I suppose this was because our county was rural. Later we moved to a red state city. By then the kids were in the more advanced classes and again they always told that the students were very respectful.

But....I **agree** with you about the quality of their professors. They were absolutely first rate! An excellent education at a community college is completely possible.

And he probably didn't wash dishes in the school cafeteria like I did.

College isn't for everyone. I find that a lot of people with college degrees are right back working in previous jobs that didn't require college. We need to be pushing vocational training, not more college. Sending everyone to college will just make college meaningless, just like high school has become.

If this is passed , universities will just raise their tuition by $4000

What has Pell grants got to do with more free funding at the taxpayers expense?

What ever happend to self-reliance and paying your own way?

Is paying your own way now a crime?
