Poll: Country's mood at historic low

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A new poll out Thursday indicates that fewer than a quarter of Americans think things are going well in the country. A new poll says 30 percent of Americans approve of President Bush's job performance.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. Poll showed that 24 percent have a positive outlook for the country, while 76 percent say things are on the wrong track.

It is the lowest number on record since 1980 and the third time in four decades that the number has dropped so low.

Recent CNN/Opinion Research Corp. polling has shown a steady drop in the country's mood. In April 2007, 51 percent said things in the country were going badly. A year later, 70 percent reiterated that position.

The poll questioned 1,041 adult Americans by telephone July 27-29, 2008. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

"Only three events -- Watergate, the Iran hostage crisis, and the economic downturn of 1992 -- have driven below 30 percent the number who think things are going well," CNN's polling director Keating Holland said. The mood of the country has been assessed since 1974.

Only four presidents -- Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and the elder George Bush -- have seen that number drop below 30 percent during their time in office; their parties all lost the White House in the next presidential election.

The poll also examined Americans' views on Congress and President Bush, showing a widespread bipartisan fallout.

Only 30 percent in Thursday's poll said they approve of how Bush is handling his job, while 69 percent disapprove.

Approval of the Democratic leaders in Congress, meanwhile, is almost as bad: Thirty-six percent

Bad news sells, considering gas prices and the housing slump I think things could be a LOT worse than they are now.

No way do people feel as depressed now as during the 70's oil embargo though, not even close IMHO.

Um, yeah ... given that we wound up with a choice between McCain and Obama I think the country is definitely on the wrong track.

I agree. I was a teen during the Carter Administration. I had just received my driver’s license...but couldn’t even afford to put gasoline in the family VW Bug, if and when we could even GET gasoline. Bummer, man. ;)

So yes, as a TEEN it was a depressing time. I would’ve been a ‘one issue voter’ back then, had I been old enough to vote, LOL!

As for me and my house, today? No bad moods here. We’re doing very, very well. But then, no one EVER polls me about anything. A ‘typical, bitter, gun-clinging religious nut’ would screw up the end result the pollsters want! :)

It all comes back to the oil crisis, which is caused by the Dems’ stubborn refusal to increase drilling.

The economic downturn of 1992? What, is that an epic disaster like the great depression? Completely silly. The media hyped the mildest recession in decades as the end of the world. This time, there hasn't even been a recession, and they are pretending as much as they can.

I think the poll is BS. Bush’s approval may be in the 30%, but if that’s the case the Congress’s has to be in low teens to upper single digits.

This “right track wrong track” questions is always interpreted by the MSM as meaning the people want to throw the Republicans out and put the DemocRats in. More and more, people just want to throw everybody out.

Well CNN did run the daily special, “A Broken Government” in the weeks preceeding the 2006 elections when control of Congress was up for grabs. I fully expect CNN to repeat their assist of Democrats this election cycle by running a special along the lines of, “America: A Nation in Despair”.

The progam’s basis will be that Bush and Republicans are the root of all our country’s ills and that by giving everything over to Obama and Democrats will bring back America back to good times of glee and joy.

After November 4th the Democrats are going to be the ones in an historically low mood (or hysterically low mood)...

When people look to the government for their salvation and seek after only material things and earthly pleasures for happiness and forget the One who promises salvation and true hope for the future, then such is bound to happen.

My business here is funny, typically we are busy when things are slow and vice-versa when good.

Things may be bad in certain sectors of the economy, but others are doing okay to good. Talk to or poll people in the rust belt and you will get one story, go south and get a completely different one.

Give me two phone books of my choice from around the country and I can make this poll vary so much it isn’t even funny.

But they won't. Reps will get thrown out of office. Dems will have a 1994 type sweep - for them not the Reps..

This should show us the power of PROPOGANDA...

After 7 years of EVERYTHING BAD! media propoganda, it’s becoming a self-fullfilling prophesy.

If you recall, the Dems and the MEdia told us it was “THE WORST ECONOMY SINCE THE GREAT DEPRESSION!” over and over again...

What we SHOULD be asking is, were democrats lying THEN? Or are they lying NOW?

Well sure. They haven't thrown their base under the bus and picked a de facto leader of the opposing party as their Presidential nominee.
