A police SWAT team raided the home of the mayor in the Prince George's County town of Berwyn Heights on Tuesday, shooting and killing his two dogs, after he brought in a 32-pound package of marijuana that had been delivered to his doorstep, police said.

And the supporters of all things wrong with cops here are probably cheering their buddies’ opportunity to shoot something.

It was in the article. It was two black labs.

Granted, I haven’t met every lab in the country, but just every one I’ve met with zero exceptions have been the most friendly dogs I’ve ever seen. If I wasn’t so attached to the whippet as a dog breed I would get labs.

Actually I support cops when they warrant it and decry them when being stupid. There is good and bad in every profession. These guys appear to be some of the bad.

This after reading where some police chief gave his SWAT team medals for invading the wrong home.

I get the impression SWAT guys live for these moments, whatever house, whatever reason.

Why let a detective knock on the door when I have a SWAT team to pay?

2 black Labs.

Ah, that explains it. Famously vicious breed.

My personal favorite quote:

"We're not in the habit of going to homes and shooting peoples' dogs," Ellis said. "If we were, there would be a lot more dead dogs around the county."

Yet during a raid by swat idiots shooting the dog seems to be SOP.

Depends on who is setting who up. Without more information, I could see a police sting operation using a substantial quantity to set up a big dealer, police supply the drugs and recover the drugs after the bust. Keep it around long enough for evidence, do it again later. Not saying that’s what happened in this instance, just using it as an example.

YAY! Let’s turn America into a police state over some weed! HOORAY FOR THE JACKBOOTS! I mean, imagine what those 32 pounds of weed might have done on the streets! Some 32 year old cellar-dweller might have laid around and smoked some of it on a saturday night! THE HORROR! And thank God they sent in a paramilitary outfit armed with MP-5’s who think they’re Navy SEALS and kill everything in sight. We couldn’t just have regular cops knock on the door with a warrant, because we all know mayors of small towns have a propensity for coming to the door with an automatic weapon blazing and screaming “SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND” when confronted by the authorities.

Perhaps it was a setup.

I can only guess what will be 'found' in the package when it is unwrapped. ...back at the station.

They left the package on his doorstep, and waited for hime to come home from work and carry it in the house.

what is your issue here? the dead dogs or the fact that 32 pounds of marijuana was taken off the streets?

Did I miss the mayor's political affiliation???

If it's Prince George's County in Maryland... there's no doubt about it. ;-)

Innocent dogs killed--again.

Perhaps they should consider employing their JBT tactics against a pair of doberman pinschers next time.

I’m wondering why these killings of harmless dogs aren’t ginning up more public outrage, especially among dog owners, than they are. This would be something tailor-made for Oprah or some other sob-sister to get on a crusade and demand legislation and controls on police that would limit the circumstances under which they can shoot animals. The animal would have to be directly attacking them.

This whole things sounds absolutely ridiculous and your description is valid. I am seeing more and more stories on tazar use, bashing in wrong doors, and shooting pets. The militarization of our police forces marches on and people here defend it to the nail even.

yes, i am sure the cops put the package there addressed to his wife, waited for him to pick it up and bring it in, and then ARRESTED NOBODY!

but now you'll tell me that the cops planted the 32 pounds of weed simply to discredit him and had no intention of bringing him in.

wow.

Ah, darn, I missed it.

Unlikely to have been truly dangerous, unlike the cops.
