After speaking before thousands of cheering journalists at the Unity 2008 convention in Chicago July 27, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) answered a question from the audience about the possibility of a federal apology to Native Americans.
Quoted by a Honolulu Star-Bulletin reporter attending the convention, Obama said:
Theres no doubt that when it comes to our treatment of Native Americans as well as other persons of color in this country, weve got some very sad and difficult things to account for.
I personally would want to see our tragic history, or the tragic elements of our history, acknowledged.
I consistently believe that when it comes to whether its Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds.
...
Obamas remarks drew special attention in Hawaii, where Obama is known by local Democrats as Hawaiis third senator. Just weeks after winning his Illinois Senate seat in 2004, Obama visited Hawaii and met with state Democratic leaders. At the top of their agenda was the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act.
Also known as the Akaka Bill, if enacted it would create a Hawaiian tribal government in spite of the fact that there never has been a Hawaiian tribe. Establishment of a tribe would allow Hawaiians to sidestep any restrictions on race-based benefits. McCain is strongly opposed to the bill.
Obamas agreement to support the Akaka Bill led to his receiving important early-money support for his presidential campaign from Hawaii Democrats many of whom had given similarly important early-money support to a little-known Arkansas governor in the early 1990s. Hawaii Democrats closely tied to Kamehameha Schools and former Governor John Waihe`e launched a draft Obama campaign in late 2006.

Yup, reparations are gonna go over big in Pa and Ohio where blue collar guys like me have been busting their asses for 40 years and more without the benefit of slaves of any color.
It amazes me when people on this Forum insist there's no difference between the 2 parties.
A bunch of lazy grifters with 1/16 hawaiian blood looking for more welfare just felt a tingle go up their leg.
Don’t apologize for me, junior senator.
And by the way, your apology to Europe for America didn’t include me, either. They’re the ones that need to apologize.
Yes, indeed. Back to the 30 Years War anyway.
Ah, my friend (I really hate to use that phrase nowadays), there was a slave ....... it was you.
bttt
What’s B. Hussein gonna do when he runs out of minorities? Invent some more?
Did I just hear Obama endorse reparations for slavery? What other "deed" can he be talking about?
Dig the Queen back up and put her back on the throne then Barry. Let them fend for themselves. These morons don’t realize how lucky they were that the U.S. annexed Hawaii. They could have been taken over by the Japanese or another country.
More entitlements
LOL........time to make up for back when you were a slave owner. Also for back when you arrived in an untamed land with no unified system of government and fought savages for your right to settle here. You’ve got a lot of making up to do. Me and my kids too, for back when we were slave owners and fought the indians.
“They could have been taken over by the Japanese or another country.”
Or left to remain third world. Look at how nice Hawaii is now. Then contrast that to other tropical paradises with the same beautiful islands, mountains and natural resources......but are not U.S. territories. With the exception of the tourist spots, the places are full of abject poverty and litter everywhere. Those places could be prosperous too if they were our states. I’ve been to Oahu and the people there were so friendly. I just loved it there. Even in the poor areas, the city of Waikiki was so clean. Whether public or private property, the place is so clean.
Or it could have become another Haiti.....
that there never has been a Hawaiian tribe. Establishment of a tribe would allow Hawaiians to sidestep any restrictions on race-based benefits.

I'm left handed. Throughout history, my brethren were burned as devils. I want my money. I'm sad.
It was one of the Roosevelts who said "If we didn't step in, they would have annihilated their entire race."
We owe them nothing. We've been supporting them for centuries already.
