Whoops. On the very day that the New York Times takes President Bush harshly to task for failing to promote human rights in China, the president meets at the White House . . . . with five Chinese human rights activists.
Railed the Times in this morning's editorial, Past Time for Speaking Out:
Two weeks before he goes to the Beijing Olympic Games, President Bush remains unacceptably silent about Chinas crackdown on basic human rights.
[H]is refusal to speak out publicly and clearly about Chinas repressive behavior is an abdication of leadership and a blot on his record.
But just hours later, the president was hosting the group of Chinese activists, in a meeting that had been planned in advance. The White House press secretary put out this statement on the meeting:

Times should have waited a day ping to Today show list.
The NYT is irrelevant.
Who cares what the Times says. Since when do they care about human rights? Sure haven’t cared about freedom for Iraq or Afghanistan these past few years.
Meanwhile, Borat Obama is buying TV time during the Olympics after demanding that Bush boycott the opening ceremonies. And nary a peep of protest from da Slimes.
The NYT is trying to reduce itself to the same condition as my hometown newspaper, where they will be standing outside grocery stores trying to give it away, and no one will take it.
NYT hasn’t cared about human rights since... ever.
(Unless it was the right to government handouts, free medical care, and suffrage for illegal aliens.)
The NYT has been silent about basic human rights for 80 years.
Ask the kulaks and farmers who were under Stalin’s rule. Oops, you can’t; they’re dead.
The NYT nazis and communists need to be rounded up for the first boat trip on a one-way cruise to North Korea. And yes, we have precedence for this. Throwing out the Tories, the Hussians and their supporters gave us 150 years of unalloyed freedom.
bump
I’m sure they repressed as much info as they could on Clinton/Gore funding from the Chi-Comms. I hope the Olympics shines a light on the issues China faces with repression of Humnan Rights. perhaps over the next few years those walls will crumble and the millions of political prisoners will be released and be able to speak out.
Where was the Times on this through the Clinton years?
