WASHINGTON -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain's signal that he may be open to a higher payroll tax for Social Security, despite previous vows not to raise taxes of any kind, is drawing sharp rebukes from conservatives.
Mr. McCain's shift has come in stages, catching some Republicans by surprise. Speaking with reporters on his campaign bus on July 9, he cited a need to shore up Social Security. "I cannot tell you what I would do, except to put everything on the table," he said.

I’m not voting for McCain, he keeps finding new reasons for me to distrust him.
We are so screwed.
Read my lips, no new RINOs!
Another betrayal at the hands of McCain in the works.
Lest he forget that those of us who are “self employed” pay DOUBLE the SS tax...
Not cool, not cool at all. My income is falling - so the last thing I need is for a larger chunk of that remaining to be taken.
Countdown until the McCainiacs show up and make excuses...
I’ll say it again, give the voter a choice between a half-ass and a full ass liberal and the total ass wins every time.
I don’t know what people are expecting here. There is no way we can pay the money due to people without a tax increase or a major cut in benefits. If I had to pay in for 40 plus years so some other schmoe can get a check then damn skippy I want it back.
Either that or let me out now and they can keep it and we’ll call it even.
Explain how over taxing and spending the surplus shores up Social Security.
A current tax increase will not solve future social security problems. A current tax increase will be spent currently.
I’d like out. The government sells SS as an insurance policy, but it’s a tax and as such what you pay in isn’t what you get out. It’s proportional from what I understand, but you pay for the current generation of beneficiaries, not for yourself. AND it’s forced, not a choice made by the person to whom the benefits and costs go.
Couldn’t tell you. Doesn’t make any sense.
I expect them to raise taxes, or change the terms IN 10 YEARS when out flow begins to exceed income. Until then, we could even CUT payroll taxes and come out better of.
Again, its to nobody’s benefit to tax more than is needed and wasting the excess on garbage programs. Raising Payroll taxes now just exacerbates the problem.
I’m the laughing stock of the week. I used “Obama wants to raise taxes on your Social Security” bit the last two weeks as an argument as to why one should NOT vote for Obama. Incidentally won most of them over to Mcain’s side.
I look forward to the inevitable apology for McCain from the “nose holders.”
The conservatives understand that. The liberals even understand that. But McCain doesn't.
McCain is a flip flopping left of center (within the conservative camp) political reincarnation of Bob Dole. Like Dole, McCain can't connect to voters and is too old, but unlike Dole, he stands a good chance at alienating his own base, may it be with taxes, the boarder........
I was told 30 years ago not to expect Social Security. I believed it then. Is still do.
