Who is McCain's Base? (Vanity)
Vanity | 7/27/2008 | Wasted Potential

Posted on 07/27/2008 1:53:14 PM PDT by wastedpotential

I have been in sackloth and ashes ever since the end of the Republican primary season dwelling on the mess we find ourselves in. Conservatives have watched the Republican nomination process get hijacked from them while they were debating whether our candidate should be socially conservative (Huckabee) vs economically conservative (Romney). Now we have McCain, who has historically proven to be mediocre at best on both sets of issues. His only strength was his view on the Iraq war.

Now that we appear to have turned the corner in Iraq, the whole withdrawal argument may be moot. If things continue this way, McCain will be reducing troop levels and bringing the home if elected president. So what is his candidacy about? If the Iraq war is basically won before the election, what is it that will define his candidacy?

Here's another question - who is McCain's base? Who will work the phones? Who will go door to door during the 72 hour GOTV? Who will organize and fund the 527 groups that can take shots at Obama that he can't (or won't) take himself, ala the Swiftboat Vets? More simply asked - who is passionate about McCain's candidacy?

The answer, to me is, nobody. Sure, a lot of us conservatives and disaffected union democrats will vote for McCain as the lesser of 2 evils, but who will "turn out" the voters? Who will sacrifice time from work and money from their budgets to see that he gets elected?

If I am right, I think that President Barack Hussein Obama will be in office come January, killing our way of life with an overwhelming Democrat Congress. Does anyone have a better answer?

I believe McCain’s commitment to oil drilling is about the same as his commitment for going to an oil rig to speak.

Nothing McCain says or does ever pans out. He is a walking disappointment. If he wins, I figure about as much excitment as watching grass grow. He makes W look like a rock star.

He really is a horrible campaigner. He gets stuck in ruts.

Who is McCain's Base? Who?
Can I be honest?
It's quite simply the same back stabbing Republican party groupies, the insiders, those that could give a sheat about conservatism.
It's the big gov crowd, the profits regardless of consequences crowd, that could absolutely care less about smaller government,
sovereign borders or American conservative principles.
It's the exact same crowd that attempted to convince everyone that Bush was on the conservatives side.
It's all a big fat lie.

Big Bump! You nailed it! Home Run! Bases loaded. Grand Slam!

It’s really not in good taste to use swear words on this site, dragnet2. I think most people here don’t appreciate it. It’s not that kind of site.

When you use swear words instead of explaining your views in clear and objective ways, it just makes you look ignorant and not very smart. And I’m a Hoosier, misplaced in California for now.

"I think the number of “conservatives” who are too cowardly or self-absorbed to vote for McCain is also diminishing significantly."

A translation of all that would be nice.

The difference is I don’t equate Presidential vanity with greatness. Policy and leadership are what counts not rock star speeches or “excitement.” There are plenty excited about McCain they just don’t always voice up on here because there is such a history of anti-McCainism.

Let me say that I don’t think it’s good that voters are not being represented. I mean that it’s good that voters are angry about it. This is our country and this is a government for the people and by the people. When the government no longer represents we, the people, it should be changed to people who will.

That sucks.

YEP. It is one of two issues (along with Amnesty) that McCain supports that absolutely MUST be stopped, IMO.

McCain has been at the forefront of this plan for the past decade. He will not back off easily. His financial backers have millions upon millions invested in its success. While he may have been less forthcoming (or vocal) about his support, I am absolutely confidant that he will push this once in office (as will Obama). We need to unite AGAINST it.

Unfortunately, many Republicans will feel an obligation to go along with it (and other things) just because McCain has an "R" next to his name. It is for that reason, that a liberal president (R) can actually be more dangerous than a liberal president (D) as the former has little to no opposition while everyone will fight like mad against the latter.

You see what people can accomplish when they're civil.

Absolutely!

But we cannot keep looking in the same old bushel basket and pulling out the only candidates that haven’t done anything immoral.

We've got to hold them all accountable and let them know when they veer off track. We've got to admit that the GOP leadership does not hold conservative principles dear and seems more interested in maintaining power than advancing any form of conservatism. We've got to work to get conservatives elected--I've found the best way is to NOT funnel funds through the RNC or GOP organizations, but to get involved directly with the candidates of choice. When we have only 13 Senators voting against legislation as horrific as the Fannie/Freddie bailout, we need to let them know how appreciative we are for them holding firm and to send scathing letters to the rest. Okay... I could go on... but I won't, LOL.

"...Obama must be defeated... period."

That is not going to happen if conservatives are expected to vote for the other Democrat.

If you say so. I think I will forgo the usual banter that would accompany that comment.

It’s been weeks since McCain mentioned cap and trade, Brownback has said McCain is coming around on stem cells, McCain said to La Raza’s face the border will be secured; he has also come out for more nukes, drilling, he moved to the right on taxes, he moved to the right on judges. Sounds like a lot of moving to the right. When will it please you? (I’m guessing never.)

Most of that is conjecture or second hand information.

Which means it is not worth spit!

Concerning the border, John McCain's idea of securing the border is having Open-Border governors "Certify" the border is secure.

Quit fabricating for your candidate. He does enough on his own!

I really want to know where all you people are going? Barr? Baldwin? They are wacked losers. I never promised McCain as Mr. Conservative - that title is reserved for Mr. Coburn. However you get a great deal more of the pie than with Obama. Most of the other GOP primary candidates were non-starters anyway. They would’ve been toast in the general excepting maybe two or three. Which means NO CONSERVATISM. If you don’t win, you don’t play!! Consider that we’re coming off of eight years of a now unpopular GOP President.

Nope. Much of what I observed was emotionalism with only a latent resemblance to conservatism.

A textbook example of liberal projection. The McCainiacs are the ones who resemble Democrats, who act on emotion instead of rationalism.  Only mindless neocons ("ex" liberals) would say something so horrificially stupid like "you keep your precious principles".

McCain is a stinkin' Democrat. And you're passionate. Tells me all I need to know.

How in the world can one be passionate about supporting a man that lives to stab us in the freakin’ back?
