Adventurer Steve Fossett 'may have faked his own death' Round-the-world flying adventurer Steve Fossett may have faked his own death, investigators have claimed. By Chris Irvine Last Updated: 12:22PM BST 27 Jul 2008 Fossett, a friend of Virgin boss Richard Branson, and the first man to fly non-stop round the earth in a hot air balloon, went missing last September when his final flight in a light plane over the Nevada desert went missing. However, Lieutenant Colonel Cynthia Ryan of the US Civil Air Patrol has said Fossett, whose body or plane was never found, could still be alive. She said: "I've been doing this search and rescue for 14 years. Fossett should have been found. "It's not like we didn't have our eyes open. We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do."

Fossett should have been found.
"It's not like we didn't have our eyes open.

Just about anything is possible:
1. sitting at the bottom of a lake/river
2. flew so wildly off-course he's might be even BARELY outside the
search area
3. high-speed crash into a mountain-side when fuel was low, so the
debris falls in little-bitty pieces under the canopy of trees
4. flow under a sizeable snowbank and won't be found until either
the debris emerges at the bottom edge of the snow bank or the
snow-bank melts (if you believe in global warming).

But...if Fossett faked his death and is living with a stable of
lady friends, all I can say is...
"It's a Man's World, Baby!".

Davis conducted an eight-month investigation for insurers Lloyd's of London, said to face a £25 million payout on Fossett's death.

We found six other planes while we were looking for him.

And were the passengers on those six planes also partying with Elvis while waiting 30 years to be found?

I notice Lloyd's of London is on the hook for $50 million dollars US funds. That one investigator has had eight months of search of various kinds.

It is a pleasant diversion from many of the real questions that may disturb many of us. I, not having to rise early anymore, did listen once in a while to "Coast to Coast". A psychic chap did say he could guide the searchers to the place where in his mind's eye, he could see the wrecked plane.

I have not heard much more, but then I use Coast to Coast to let me drift off to sleep. I have for some time had an irrational indignation at two major psychics- perhaps because they earn mega bucks and I do not have mega bucks (chuckle). I add a disclaimer- more power to them if it is within the law to do so.

I wonder if the good lady, the one who claimed only a Democrat would be elected President in 2000, making a screwed up face about "them", should be contacted. I have her pronouncements on tape made 1999. Added to that the gentleman with his 24 failed "hits" and about 4 correct "hits" can tell us. This sending his subject into ecstasy. After all people just know he can contact their dearly beloved.

Please excuse this ramble on this pleasant Sunday.

People fake their own death to escape a bad situation (like a criminal charge) or to collect life insurance money.

Neither of those motives would apply to Fossett.

Exactly.

The woman is a jerk for even making such a public statement with little or no proof.

Now if $20 million was missing with his fingerprints all over it, she would have some grounds.

OK, so suppose he faked it. Tell me where the airplane is...

OH, I know, he has it under his lady friends bed.

How the hell do you hide an airplane in an area where you can either be picked up or walk out? It would have to be hidden in some place so remote and inaccessible that being flown out or walking out would be almost impossible.

She is a fool and should be replaced by someone rational.

Uh oh. I just figured it out. He had a prior arrangement with aliens and they brought a flying saucer big enough to take the plane with them.

Lieutenant Colonel Cynthia Ryan doesn’t let the facts get in the way of her inflated opinion of herself.

Good possibilities. Thanks. In 1971 an aircraft with 93 passengers disappeared over the Peruvian rainforest. They never spotted any wreckage (the plane disintegrated two miles up) but some 10 days later Juliane Köpcke walks out with one Helluva tale of survival.

Maybe Fossett's plane was torn apart and suffered the same fate.

Somebody with Fossett’s resources doesn’t need to fake his own death if he wanted to just disappear and live a quiet life somewhere. Anywhere he wanted.

He was a commodities trader who routinely went through boom and bust cycles.. theoretically the reason to fake death would be money if things were going badly for him.

You left out one other possibility: They searched the wrong area.

Early reports said that Fosset's flight was to check out a dry lake bed near Eureks, Nevada for a possible land speed run.

Eureka, Nevada is on the eastern side of the state, south of Carlin. There are such features there, especially over the mountains to the East of Eureka, Nevada which have very low surface variation and might be suitable.

There are also a lot of mountains and some pretty hostile country between there and the western part of the state.
