Soy foods 'reduce sperm numbers'
BBC ^ | July 23, 2008 | Grant Junkie

A regular diet of even modest amounts of food containing soy may halve sperm concentrations, suggest scientists. The study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, found 41 million fewer sperm per millilitre of semen after just one portion every two days. The authors said plant oestrogens in foods such as tofu, soy mince or milk may interfere with hormonal signals. However, a UK expert stressed that most men in Asia eat more soy-based products with no fertility problems.

Oestrogenic compounds in food or the environment have been of concern for a number of years, but we have mostly thought that it was boys exposed in the uterus before birth who were most at risk Dr Allan Pacey Sheffield University Animal studies have suggested that large quantities of soy chemicals in food could affect fertility, but other studies looking at consumption in humans have had contradictory findings. The Harvard School of Public Health study looked at the diets of 99 men who had attended a fertility clinic with their partners and provided a semen sample. The men were divided into four groups depending on how much soy they ate, and when the sperm concentration of men eating the most soy was compared with those eating the least, there was a significant difference. The "normal" sperm concentration for a man is between 80 and 120 million per millilitre, and the average of men who ate on average a portion of soy-based food every other day was 41 million fewer. Dr Jorge Chavarro, who led the study, said that chemicals called isoflavones in the soy might be affecting sperm production. These chemicals can have similar effects to the human hormone oestrogen.

Hey, Gabz, whenever you feel like jetting me a copy of that recipe, I'd be your bestest freeper fan for life. That quiche sounds wonderful.

Who eats soy? Radical vegetarians for the most part.

I'm about as carnivorous as you can get, and I crush sushi with soy sauce at least 2-3 times a week.

While you're at it, I'd be very interested in your recipe/proportions of hummus. That's one foood I love experimenting with.

This is a load of nonsense and it’s been brought out by some of the so-called “Survivalists” that took over the real survival lists many years ago, before the internet got big.

Our lists were taken over by kooks and creeps who were anti-government, and were complaining about things like fluoride in the water, soy beans, and “government control”, Big Brother, you name it.

Instead of our lists being what they were initially, that is sharing information on how to track animals, kill a deer, and how to prepare the meat, or how to make bows and arrows, we ended up being taken over by idiots and fools who push stupid junk science.

Daddy’s don’t eat soy due to the fact that soy acts like estrogens in the body - that means testosterone to estrogen ratios being out of whack. Which means prostate and other sexual problems. And for goodness sake folks, DO NOT feed young boys ANYTHING with soy.

My husband loves my chocolate pie recipe, but our son won’t eat it now that he knows it has tofu in it.
Easiest pie recipe ever and tastes soooo rich.
Tiny pieces with real whipped cream and raspberries...special treat not served very often.

Quiche just happens to be the dinner menu for tomorrow — crabmeat, cheese and spinach quiche to be exact.

Quiche and beer.

Cheers!

Do you do guacamole?

Cheers!

Well, being made from legumes, it does have some, er... negative effects for some people.

Hmmmmmmmm --- hadn't thought about that aspect. So sorry it does not agree with you :)

Hey, Gabz, whenever you feel like jetting me a copy of that recipe, I'd be your bestest freeper fan for life. That quiche sounds wonderful.

There is no secret to it. I use the basic "impossible pie" recipe from either a box of Bisquick or the Bisquick website and then add what I have on hand.

We wound up having steaks last night, because no one was interested in heating up the kitchen.

If hubby and child don't catch anything on their fishing/crabbing expedition this afternoon I guess that is what will be on the menu for tonight. To the basic egg/milk/bisquick mixture I'll add 1/2 pound crab meat, 10 ounce box of frozen chopped spinach (defrosted and squeezed out) and 4 or 5 slices of swiss cheese (diced).

While you're at it, I'd be very interested in your recipe/proportions of hummus.

I was exaggerating with my 3 cans of beans and 2 heads of garlic, but I do like garlicky hummus.

To 2 cans (15oz) of chickpeas I will add about 4 tablespoons of minced/chopped garlic, up to 1/3 cup of tahini, 3-4 tablespoons of lemon juice and about 2-3 tablespoons olive oil. Then I just adjust for taste.

I also make a hummus with black beans, for which I use lime juice instead of lemon and also add a bit of finely minced chile peppers.

Yeah we do :)

I read your previous post. That really bites about your lists being taken over by the weirdos. My husband can field dress and skin a dear, and our 10yo daughter loves to help, and I learned REAL fast how to do much of the butchering. I'm still no expert, but I am getting better with each passing year.

But, of course!!!!! I also make a mean salsa verde from tomatillos and serranos! Love that stuff on tamales, which I also make from scratch.

Not too shabby for an "irish" kid from NYC :)

Here’s the chocolate tofu pie recipe.

16 oz. Silken tofu (room temperature)
1 Graham Cracker Crust
1 pkg (12 oz) Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Chips
1 tsp. Vanilla

Directions
Mix the room temoperature tofu and vanilla in the blender. (Room temp tofu is important, too cold and it will solidify the chips, resulting in chocolate speckled tofu pie) Put the chocolate chips into the saucepan and cook over medium heat until melted. Add melted chocolate to the blender and mix until smooth. Pour entire mixture into pie crust and refrigerate for about 3 hours. Serve with real whipped cream and fresh raspberries. Enjoy!
