Bale, 34, attended a police station after it was reported his mother and sister had reported him to police.
The alleged incident was believed to have taken place on Sunday night at Park Lane's Dorchester Hotel where Bale is staying.
His mother Jenny, 61, and sister Sharon, 40, are said to have gone to a police station in Hampshire to make the allegation, which was subsequently referred to the Metropolitan Police.
A Met Police spokesman said: "A 34-year-old man attended a London Police Station on Tuesday by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault.
"He currently remains in custody..."

There are always exceptions to every rule. If Chelsea b___ch slapped Hillary, which of us wouldn't at least smile with satisfaction?
It's post-Thatcherite Britain. You can probably be charged with assault for looking at someone too long.
Nor did I.
Christian Bale lost 63 pounds for his role in 'The Machinist.'
I’m surprised at how his guilt is automatically assumed by so many here. I find it suspicious that this happened the evening before his big premiere as his career and movie are about to take off. I have no idea if he is innocent or not but my gut reaction when I first heard this was “money.”
There are two sides to every story.
I don’t assume his guilt at all - while there are plenty of nasty actors there are also plenty of nasty family members of celebs who are always holding their hands out.
It may be, for all we know, that mom and sis were expecting bigger hand-outs than he was willing to give and things heated up...... there are these reports of “verbal assault” now, whatever the hell that is..... is that merely yelling at someone? Hard to imagine how that could be a police matter, especially within a family and not in a public place, but I don’t know how far the politically correct laws have gone in the UK.
I don’t encourage anyone to yell at their parent(s) or siblings (I don’t) but it should have to be a lot more serious than that to even be a potential police matter.
He may be right or wrong, they may all be in the wrong, I sure don’t claim to know..... but I’m not assuming anything against him (or mom and sis) without some real facts.
I just heard on the news that the sister claimed he “pushed” one of them. So that is the nature of the “assault” for which they went to the police on the evening of his big night.
I’m guessing he wouldn’t give in to their demands and they exacted revenge.
He was charged with assault and the authorities peppered him with many questions.
He was questioned but not charged.
We will probably hear more than we want to in the following days.
MAAAAAAA, I told you once, I wasn’t imitating Clint Eastwood, don’t make me tell you again! Heath Ledger’s performance didn’t outshine me!!!!!
From those statements, I get the feeling that he doesn't have the best relationship with his own parents. Maybe they are just out to make money. Maybe they are blackmailing him now that he is so successful.
I have read that his mother was a circus performer and that he had to work since age 8. I dosen't condone violence, but he was not charged and was released, so we don't know the whole story. My first thought was that he was forced into child labor to support his parents and that now that he is successful, his mother has her hand out. I also read that alcohol was involved (on the mother's part).
I respect him as an actor and am reserving judgment until more is known.
Bale is one of the best working today. He gets into the role ala DiNero and takes on a variety of movies unlike many others. That said, if he hit them, let him do his time.
I’m guessing ‘verbal assualt’ was yelling something threatening-sounding? Someone remind me never to visit the UK with my siblings... I hate to think of what we’d get accused of in the process of our routine squabbles and regular minor injuries, especially considering that my younger brother frequently forgets he’s now literally twice my size, and my younger sister has never been hesitant to get physically violent towards me.
And since when does someone ‘attend’ a police station? It’s not a freaking concert or book signing or theater or whatever the heck else you go to because you’re looking for some sort of entertainment or culture.
Haha something like that.
I read earlier that CB was the one who supported his family from a young age.
Found this in the comments section on a site tonight. Grain of salt and all that, but very interesting. I am still trying to figure out who JJ is and where is his site.
Comments from JJ’s site:
Edna: “His mom and sister are alcoholics and drug addicts, they showed up at his hotel uninvited and highly intoxicated. they were calling him big shot and that he needs to take care of his own. His mom was yelling that he would be nothing without her and he owed her. His sister was begging for money and when he was pushing her toward the door his mother came from behind and started hitting him on his head and kicking him. He managed to push them both out the door and his mom fell, they called the police and wanted him arrested. I believe that Chirstian is the victim here not his mom or sister”
Mandy: “edna, how do you know all that?”
Edna: “My father works security at the hotel, and he said it was a mess. His mom and sister wanted the front desk worker to let them into his room to wait for him. When they were told no they started cussing and yelling. they sat in front of his door for an hour until he finally arrived.”
Let’s see if any of that is true. Interesting.

"He wasn't arrested like police in the US arrest people (handcuffed, put in jail, etc). In London, police arrest at the drop of a hat people to question them. Totally different context. He had a meeting with the polica and showed up - they "arrested" him. And he's NOT out on bail. That is a British term meaning that they let him go after they questioned him - not the US term that he paid bail and was released. If this was a serious offense, I can't imagine the police giving a crap about his premiere and waiting 24 hours to question with him or let him go today to return 2 months from now."

Cash, Money, Moms: Why Bale Was Busted
Posted Jul 23rd 2008 1:00PM by TMZ Staff
Sources tell TMZ Christian Bale has had a long-standing difficult relationship with his mom and Bale’s camp believes the motivation for the whole assault charge may be $$$.
We’re told when Christian’s mom and dad divorced nearly two decades ago, his mom forced him to choose between the two. Christian picked his dad, and father and son moved out to L.A. in 1992, where his dad became his manager.
Somehow Bale’s relationship with the mom has been “bitter” ever since. Bale has told friends his mother was extremely jealous of both his and his dad’s success.
Last Sunday, Bale let his mom and sis into his hotel suite, though it was by no means an olive branch. As we first reported, there was physical contact, but somewhere in between a push and a brush. No one fell and no one was hurt.
Christian’s camp thinks this could be nothing more than a shakedown. We’re told some newspapers and mags have already been throwing around “insane” amounts of money for the story, so mom and sis could score big.
But our sources say the cops are starting to see the whole thing Christian’s way, and the charges could disappear faster than Batman.

What kind of trash has somebody tried and convicted based on a news story alleged by two drunks?
