Once upon a time, people who wanted to be president were not expected to admit it in public. This mask of false indifference had to be dropped when the rise of primaries forced candidates to campaign actively for the office.

Compromising as a last resort is of course a practical thing to do. That IS pragmatism.
Reagan was conservative. Reagan was pragmatic.
Politically Romney is in a great position for VP. We have some conservatives arguing that he is really a hard core liberal—The Rino Anti-Christ. If Romney is nominated for VP, the liberals will say he is a hard core conservative. The two mixed messages will play out in the media that the extremists from both sides hate him and he will be viewed as a moderate.
So he will be viewed as a moderate and then he will get elected and then he can do some really hard core conservative actions. I love it. I love that Romney when he was Governor drew the Libs in Massachusetts insane because he could instantly quote the cost impact of any liberal idea (99% of the he disagreed with) and squashed it in the court of public opinion. They called him spreadsheet Mitt and he would drive the Pelosi’s and the Reid’s insane becuase he would make them all look bad!!!!!
I didnt leave him off. CNN did.

I’m not a purist...
I havent shouted at the internet since Romney said how proud he was of his abortion stance since 1970, on the 1st debate, and I havent listened to daytime talk radio for weeks...
I listen to Terry Anderson on Sunday nights, but he doesnt swoon over Romney...
I’ve heard of a principled conservative.
Never heard of a pragmatic conservative.
IMO, political pragmatism is defined as someone who uses political expediency to drive their politics.
There are a very vocal Romney lovers that I have seen in EVERY forum Mitt's name is in. They are for Romney purely because Romney is a Mormon.
Stop it! Look at us! We look like a bunch of G—damned fifth graders!
“Mitt’s conservative, not he’s not, yes he is, I’m voting for Obama, I’m voting McCain, no I’m not, blah blah blah blah.”
I can’t stand the bickering. While we’re arguing, the Obama campaign is drawing up plans to make us the next Soviet Union.
Romney governed as a villainous lying POS.
They called themselves "progressives" for a while. Then they tried "fiscal conservative" as a label. Now "pragmatic conservative" is their latest dodge. Next year I imagine it will be "transcendent conservative" or some such rot.
Well, that's different!
/sarcasm
You sound just like the “Harpies” that ruled FR with an iron fist for so many years.
They didn’t like conservatives either.
It wasn’t “the party” who picked McCain. It was democrats, independents and some moderates.
With the help of the Huckster
And people who pushed the Huckster, to hurt Romney and help McCain, like Michael Medved and Bill Crystal.
Nice work on this very long thread, CM55! : )
Thanks!
These days they’re seeming to get to 600 very quick
You don't expect them to admit it?
