President McCain in 2000 I must be one of the few conservative writers in cyberspace who never feared a McCain presidency. When Senator McCain looked like he might win the Republican nomination in 2000, I asked what, exactly, my friends were so worried about. McCain was honest, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were steeped in moral slipperiness. McCain was pro-life, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were pro-abortion. McCain, like Bush, supported a strong military, while Clinton famously “loathed” the military and Gore followed him like a trained poodle. McCain’s ACU (American Conservative Union) voting record is conservative and was even more conservative in 2000. Who did I favor for the nomination in 2000? Bush, because I liked him more and I thought he would win, but was I afraid of a McCain presidency? No, I was afraid that the nation could not survive a third Clinton term. Has anything happened in the last eight years to change my mind? Not, not really. September 11, 2001 has driven all politics since then, even energy (remember how recently gasoline was cheap?) and while I can conceive of McCain handling the war on terror differently, in some ways, than Bush, I cannot see either man being particularly better than the other. Although we are sometimes loath to admit it, McCain appeared more prescience than Bush on Iraq: McCain supported the Surge, asked for the Surge when Bush was reluctant, and McCain was dead right. The Left would have vilified President McCain just as it vilified President Bush and for the same reasons: It wants America to lose all its wars.

I have helped myself by watching that movie “John Adams”. A great reminder of the birth of this country and how far we have strayed.

I always like to reread the George Washington farewell address that spoke of his fear of “parties”. He was spot on, and we failed to listen and pass it on.

Political parties make people more interested in a win for the party than a win for the nation. They blind us and compel us to accept the unacceptable as Americans in order to win. They have blinded us to the corrupt “outside influences” that slowly work to destroy our very special Republic.

I agree that this whole election makes me very sad. I wish people would just open their eyes and really look at what we are becoming. Unfortunately, the outside influences reign at the moment.

They will never get my support, or my vote.

So many of the folks here are absolutely delusional... They think that allowing H to become President will "magically" create a groundswell of support for the GOP, after the Dems screw it up...

I've got news for them... If H. gets in, they will NOT screw it up... The economy will humming, all of his policies will be praised to high Heaven ny the MSM, and the sheeple, getting their news from soundbites, will see him as the new messiah...

Guess what... The Clintons did two supremely dumb things and got tripped up... Healthcare (before greasing the sheeple to realize it's the "right" thing to do, and Monica... We got very lucky, else, we would have had Gore for 4/8 years, and a Dem Senate/congress throughout... they're not stupid enough to make those mistakes again...

I keep reading/hearing that an Obama administration will galvanize people. I have seen no proof that might happen. Look at 2006. That sure did get people motivated.

Exactly, it's a pipe dream... We have solid, empirical evidence, the past 1.5 years, that it doesn't happen... With the MSM pimpin for H non-stop, and voters' attention spans getting shorter all of the time, it doesn't take much to totally lie to the public about the great accomplishments of H... If he's in, he's in for 8 years... the real question is how long will his VP be in? The whole political landscape, court system, and media will change in 8 years... With the spin they'll employ, I can bet my bottom dollar that liberalism --- and yes that includes gutting the 2nd amendment, will be the law of the land... In every respect you can think of....

If I were the head of a country like Myanmar, and was about to be attacked cause I had huge mineral resources, I'd rather be attacked by Vietnam than China... Both would cause damage, but with China, it would be overwhelming and we'd never recover... With Vietnam, we'd be beaten up, but buy some time to recover and hopefully build up a defense that can get rid of the enemy...

H's destruction will be total... Don't you folks get it? Every social policy will pass (the GOP doesn't want to be labeled rac)... Most economic policies will pass as well, for the same reason... Judges at all levels will become liberal...

It sounds like a doomsday scenario, and I could go on all day... but, think about it... Every lib policy Hillary wanted to employ but couldn't... every policy moveon and the lefty zealots want, will come to fruition in 8 years of an H presidency

Absolutely not, in fact I'm counting on the fact they won't... the GOP today will let Hussein and McCain push all their socialist policies through unabated. It is for this reason why the GOP must understand they will either have to align to the conservative nature of their supporters, or they will all be voted out of office.

The economy? Nope... it should be solid... Until this year, it's been solid, and the MSM has been calling for a recession for a couple of years...

Tax increases? The MSM will finally convince the sheeple that it's for the greater good...

His foreign policy? Nope, he'll scale back on his timetables, and his foreign policy will be nearly identical to the GOP's...

Where will he be tripped up? The policies that he enacts will be done with a complicit, fear-laden GOP congress... so if things go wrong, they'll be blamed

There is nothing fundamental that Hussein will do that McCain won't. With McCain, people will go along because they feel safe because he has a meaningless (R) next to his name. With Hussein, they will not tolerate the loss of rights... you have to add the emotional factor in to understand the difference.

If people weren't emotional, they'd realize there is no gas price problem... but since they are emotional, it's all you hear about besides Hussein's latest fart...

You have to factor in the emotional element to know why McCain is more dangerous than Hussein in the long run. Winning a battle only to lose the war isn't wise.

The fact is, no conservative with principle will vote for McCain just to defeat Hussein. John McCain stands for nothing true conservatives stand for... True conservatives are rightfully going to stay home... evidently the message in 2006 wasn't heard... eventually there will be no positions for these scumbag liberals who call themselves conservatives...

McCain is more dangerous than Hussein because of apathy... People expect Hussein to be a socialist... They will gladly let McCain take their rights because he was the GOP candidate, which the dumb masses think is some sort of branding of being a conservative.

We're not talking about very intelligent voters here my friend... 47% of recently polled American's say they blame the GOP controlled congress for the current state of their (perceived) misery... the only problem with that is of course, that 47% was too dumb to know that the congress isn't controlled by the GOP... see what we're dealing with?

Here's the question so many McCain stalwarts are ignoring: Are House and Senate Republicans more likely to oppose the same leftist policies proposed by John McCain or by Barack Obama? We have 8 years of evidence to show that Republican officials will go along with virtually any program a President proposes, no matter how hare-brained or leftist, if the President is from their party. We all know what an "unreliable element" to conservatives John McCain has been. So, from years of watching him, none us should be surprised, if he becomes President, that he colludes with the left to pass their agenda. And, guess what? Because he's got the "R" after his name, he'll get his nasty leftist agenda passed with help from members of his own party.

If, however, President Obama proposes the same leftist agenda with the help from the dems, Republican officials will do what an opposition party is supposed to do and work to sink or mitigate his programs.

Like it or not, President McCain will be an enemy to conservativsm who's in our camp. President Obama will be an enemy to conservatism, but he'll be outside our camp. I don't know about others, but I would much rather have my enemy where I can see him, out in the open, instead of beside me, masquerading as my friend.

In other words, from what I've seen of John McCain, if he's our "friend," he's no better than our enemy, Barack Obama.
