Why McCain Must Win

President McCain in 2000 I must be one of the few conservative writers in cyberspace who never feared a McCain presidency. When Senator McCain looked like he might win the Republican nomination in 2000, I asked what, exactly, my friends were so worried about. McCain was honest, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were steeped in moral slipperiness. McCain was pro-life, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were pro-abortion. McCain, like Bush, supported a strong military, while Clinton famously “loathed” the military and Gore followed him like a trained poodle. McCain’s ACU (American Conservative Union) voting record is conservative and was even more conservative in 2000. Who did I favor for the nomination in 2000? Bush, because I liked him more and I thought he would win, but was I afraid of a McCain presidency? No, I was afraid that the nation could not survive a third Clinton term. Has anything happened in the last eight years to change my mind? Not, not really. September 11, 2001 has driven all politics since then, even energy (remember how recently gasoline was cheap?) and while I can conceive of McCain handling the war on terror differently, in some ways, than Bush, I cannot see either man being particularly better than the other. Although we are sometimes loath to admit it, McCain appeared more prescience than Bush on Iraq: McCain supported the Surge, asked for the Surge when Bush was reluctant, and McCain was dead right. The Left would have vilified President McCain just as it vilified President Bush and for the same reasons: It wants America to lose all its wars.

"It’s “all or nothing” “conservatives” who gave us this miserable Congress in ‘06."

And it is folks that will vote for anyone with an (R) beside their name that have given us a candidate as lousy as McCain.

Just how bad does McCain’s opponent have to be to vote for McCain?

Stalin? Bin Laden? Hitler? The Joker?

“No thanks.. I am done voting for the lesser of two evils.”

OK. How about the better of two angels?

Juan won the GOP nomination fair and square. There’s no way I’m not going to crawl to the polls to vote against somebody with a 0 ACU rating if there’s an alternative candidate with a 82 rating.

Juan’s not pure enough for you, I get it, but all you’re doing is trying to suppress the GOP base and that’ll give America President Barack Hussein Obama.

His lifetime conservative voting record is actually 82.3% as of 2006.

...state your high-minded refusal to settle for anyone who isn’t on your ‘perfect list’ is childish.

McCain helped gut the GOP majority.

McCain preferred Liberal Democrats to Conservative Republicans.

McCain uses politics in the worst way for self gain.

McCain has and will consort with GOP opponents even to the detriment of the GOP.

Non of that has anything to do with issues or left/right/center positions.

Supporting McCain is supporting the Other Democrat in this race.

And that doesn't even go into the people like you having battered constituency syndrome!

Beats a Pelosi, Reid or Schumer any day.

No thanks.. I am done voting for the lesser of two evils.

But not, evidently, done getting the greater of the two.

I’m always amazed by how quickly compromisers blame those who refuse to compromise for the results of their own compromises.

This thread is just the latest example.

The Republican Party is completely and utterly compromised.

It’s now useless.

Do “no votes” count against those numbers? I’ve always wondered...

Just how bad does a GOP candidate have to be for you to not vote for him?

Not only will I not support McCain I will use every opportunity to remind you and others of what he did to you and the GOP and hope that you gain some self respect before November.

I keep reading/hearing that an Obama administration will galvanize people. I have seen no proof that might happen. Look at 2006. That sure did get people motivated.

I fear Obama...deeply. Far worse than I fear McCain.

Have to be worse than the opposing democrat obviously.

No, you don't get it, you're a bone head.

McCain screwed the GOP over time and time again then expects the GOP to act like idiots and support him.

And, like idiots, they do!

And the shoe fits your foot perfectly, doesn't it?

“How insulting. McCain doesn’t “suck slightly less than” Barack Hussein Obama”

The heck he doesn’t. That may be the only frickin’ way he wins this year.

85% lifetime from the ACU. But the last 8 years have held several low-60s, plus we have the magnificent McCain-Feingold anti-free speach law, McCain-Lieberman cap-and-trade bill, and McCain-Kennedy illegal amnesty bill.

What dismays me is the rabid attacks against either side. some pro-McCain folks call names and berate. Some anti-McCains also call names and berate.

In the end, it’s got to be a personal choice for every voter.

“McCain doesn’t suck “slightly less” than Obama. You been hiding in a cave for the last year or so??”

So you are saying that they are the same?
