President McCain in 2000 I must be one of the few conservative writers in cyberspace who never feared a McCain presidency. When Senator McCain looked like he might win the Republican nomination in 2000, I asked what, exactly, my friends were so worried about. McCain was honest, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were steeped in moral slipperiness. McCain was pro-life, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were pro-abortion. McCain, like Bush, supported a strong military, while Clinton famously loathed the military and Gore followed him like a trained poodle. McCains ACU (American Conservative Union) voting record is conservative and was even more conservative in 2000. Who did I favor for the nomination in 2000? Bush, because I liked him more and I thought he would win, but was I afraid of a McCain presidency? No, I was afraid that the nation could not survive a third Clinton term. Has anything happened in the last eight years to change my mind? Not, not really. September 11, 2001 has driven all politics since then, even energy (remember how recently gasoline was cheap?) and while I can conceive of McCain handling the war on terror differently, in some ways, than Bush, I cannot see either man being particularly better than the other. Although we are sometimes loath to admit it, McCain appeared more prescience than Bush on Iraq: McCain supported the Surge, asked for the Surge when Bush was reluctant, and McCain was dead right. The Left would have vilified President McCain just as it vilified President Bush and for the same reasons: It wants America to lose all its wars.

Good, you folks are the only people I know that actually DESERVE Obama.
McCain is closest to a D an R can get.
Four years from now you will be cheering Hillary as a GOP candidate. Kewl.
Thank ya!
:-)
Amen all around
Same here.
Damn!
Are you my alter ego or alternate nom de freep?
Let me say again, the man may not remember my name but I do know him, a bit about his family. He is solid.
In the Pensacola area, all political candidates really do have to go thru him at some time.
He is such an unapologetic Conservative (and historian) that he will frighten most Freepers. And I’ll admit that there are times that I do not agree with him fully.
Sometimes he’s provacative and that comes with having a radio show and newsletter.
But you won’t find anyone more solidly pro life or 2A friendly.
Seriously if you have trouble or questions about his stances contact me. I should be able to give you context on his statements.
Sara is in the news again - this time for canning the head of the State Troopers because the commish would not fire the trooper that is her EX-brother in Law. Nasty custody battle and she really needs to take care of ‘lil sis’ - so sorry.
Pretty face, same old politics......
Sorry, no Sara for me
That is foolish on a couple levels.
First, NO PARTY OWNS ANY VOTES! It is up to the candidate to earn them. If he doesn't EARN the votes then he is simply a whining sissy to blame 3rd party candidates that did earn those votes.
Second, Perot brought out voters who may not have ever voter for either candidate and would have simply just sat home.
The idea that any candidate 'steals' votes is simply un American and the idea that the voter owes his vote to a candidate or part is so repugnant that the owner of that idea should be horsewhipped and stripped of citizenship.
You are a real dumb ass aren't you?
Somehow in your itty bitty mind you equate criticism of one candidate as support for another.
I'm going on my tenth anniversary here on FR. I'll bet that I don't see you here a year from now.
Priceless!
The GOP had a majority once upon a time but McCain helped engineer a destructive alliance with the opposition.
I don't like to talk about his POW days but it seems that working with the opposition for his benefit is not something he learned in the senate.
McCain proposes a moderate to liberal judge and the Democrats, by nature, accept the nomination.
The Republicans, by nature, support their president and give him the nominee he wants. Sure there's fighting but he gets what he wants.
What? You actually expect the GOP to oppose their own president?
What a fool you are!
And now you see JUST ONE of the reasons that a McCain presidency could be as bad or worse than Obama.
I’ve got his home page marked and I’m going to ask one of my sons to look it over, and I’ll do the same. THANKS for the word!
That’s right. Because McCain has served his country and is the candidate with the best ideological balance that has a good chance to win.
He doesn’t abstain. He’s been voting day after day for 21 years. He can miss a few votes in my view to run for potus.
Maybe not but I’m certainly more shrewd. I picked and backed the winner from the get go.
I believe the Admin Moderater said to conduct this forum without personal insults.
That is first hand stuff we need to hear....thx !!
Seriesly though, the long forgotten fact that juannie was annointed with the rin-o-p oil weeks BEFORE the primary process got to my state, speaks volumes, as I effectively had nobody on the primary ballot to vote FOR except RP...[and reliable info on him was scarce]...so basically this 'nomination' was reminicent of a castro/hussein [saddam not barry] process, not a 'republican' effort...
that said, I dont know much about Gov Palin cept that shes got bigger stones than most of the fellas at this point...
Im sure the dirt is being shoveled outta her closets as we speak...
Baldwin I know even less off...
At this point I have no real faith in any human that NEEDS to be placed in a high position...probably why I liked Fred T so much, he didnt really seem to have a compulsion to rule...
Honestly, short of the convention exploding and doing the 'right' thing [pun intended]... I dont belive that any man [or woMAN] can convince me of their faithfulness to lead instead of rule...
therefore my faith [polar opposite of fear] will reside in the Lord Jesus, and His Will being done regardless of the humans in play...
