Why McCain Must Win

President McCain in 2000 I must be one of the few conservative writers in cyberspace who never feared a McCain presidency. When Senator McCain looked like he might win the Republican nomination in 2000, I asked what, exactly, my friends were so worried about. McCain was honest, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were steeped in moral slipperiness. McCain was pro-life, like Bush, while Clinton and Gore were pro-abortion. McCain, like Bush, supported a strong military, while Clinton famously “loathed” the military and Gore followed him like a trained poodle. McCain’s ACU (American Conservative Union) voting record is conservative and was even more conservative in 2000. Who did I favor for the nomination in 2000? Bush, because I liked him more and I thought he would win, but was I afraid of a McCain presidency? No, I was afraid that the nation could not survive a third Clinton term. Has anything happened in the last eight years to change my mind? Not, not really. September 11, 2001 has driven all politics since then, even energy (remember how recently gasoline was cheap?) and while I can conceive of McCain handling the war on terror differently, in some ways, than Bush, I cannot see either man being particularly better than the other. Although we are sometimes loath to admit it, McCain appeared more prescience than Bush on Iraq: McCain supported the Surge, asked for the Surge when Bush was reluctant, and McCain was dead right. The Left would have vilified President McCain just as it vilified President Bush and for the same reasons: It wants America to lose all its wars.

I voted, for the last time, for the lesser evil.

I don't know. There are many things that could happen and much that I cannot even imagine.

I read in the Old Testament about leaders who had the opportunity to see things as you do with limited choices or to see things from a different perspective. When they saw things from that different perspective they triumphed.

Gideon and Joshua both triumphed with odds that looked bad. They had faith in something bigger than themselves.

It’s impossible to debate someone that’s counting on a supernatural intervention in the issue.

There is a least a good chance McCain will.

He's kept his word about so little for so long, why do you think he will keep his word on this? He would be breaking at least the spirit of his words to the Hillary supporters when he all but promised them another Ginsburg or Meyers. He would be appointing judges that would toss out some of the legislation he is most proud of passing - stuff with his name on it. I don't think there is a chance he would risk that.

There isn't anybody this go 'round, that's all...

There always is. Think of someone—an ordinary citizen, a neighbor, a friend serving overseas, a leader in your community—because the fact of the matter is that the current slate of presidential candidates are so arrogant and separated from the rest of us that none of them are fit to hold the office of President.

Hear, hear! I’m glad we’re not electing a King or something.

“McCain preferred Liberal Democrats to Conservative Republicans.”

McCain never campaigned for a liberal democrat in his life. He’s campaigned for many, many conservative Republicans however.

Hear, hear! I’m glad we’re not electing a King or something.

"It has ever been my hobby-horse to see rising in America an empire of liberty, and a prospect of two or three hundred millions of freemen, without one noble or one king among them. You say it is impossible. If I should agree with you in this, I would still say, let us try the experiment, and preserve our equality as long as we can."

—John Adams, letter to Count Sarsfield, February 3, 1786

As I said before, the primaries are OVER, and like it or not, McCain IS the Republican presidential candidate.

If you are not supporting McCain you ARE helping Obama.

You can’t wish away reality.

How do you know that? They may like it, Other socialist countries rise up and change it, do they still have socialized medicine?

The thing to remember is they're getting full on socialism with either Hussein or McCain. With McCain, it will come quietly, with Hussein it will be vocal, and ugly and ultimately conservatism will win.

” McCain seems to be leaning towards another America hating scumbag liberal, Mitt Romney, as his VP running mate...”

I was agreeing with you up to this point. With this line, you and I part ways, and I lose all respect.

The “America hater” has by far given the best speech on his love of country. He’s passionately defended the Federal Marriage Amendment on the floor of the US Senate. He’s argued to shut down the borders and crack down on those who hire illegals. He’s argued to cut spending by inflation minus 1%. He actually seems to understand how a capitalistic society should be run, and he seems to get that legal immigrants should add something from our society—not drain it.

And somehow, I’m supposed to believe he’s an America-hating liberal?

You people make no sense. None.

I give up. The primary season is over.
