McCain Adviser, Phil Gramm, Leaves Campaign

McCain Adviser, Phil Gramm, Leaves Campaign NEW YORK (CBS) ― Phil Gramm, a top adviser to presidential candidate John McCain, is resigning from the role as campaign co-chairman after his comments that the United States had become a "nation of whiners" who constantly complain about the state of the economy.

The former U.S. senator from Texas and past presidential candidate made the remarks earlier this month. McCain immediately distanced himself from the comments, but they have been criticized constantly as McCain tries to show he can help steer the country past its current financial troubles.

Gramm had also suggested that the country was facing a "mental recession" instead of real economic problems. Gramm said in a statement late Friday that he is stepping down as a co-chair of the campaign to "end this distraction."

Well I am in michigan. However our economy tends to act as an early warning of things to come in the rest of the country even if somewhat magnified.

“Tell me what Gramm said that isn’t true...”

Anything regarding voting for McCain.

“There must be something more than what Gramm said during the past ten days to have this “resignation” occur. Some ill-advised client, something not discovered prior, something....”

Gramm is a Conservative.

Not just that. Gramm was a Democrat who renounced the party and became Republican. Not just that, but Gramm waited until his next re-election campaign to renounce the Democrats and ask his constituents to send him back as a Republican. Gramm was used and the example against Jim Jeffords, who ran as a Republican, and then became a Democrat after winning.

Who else has McCain dumped?

I don't remember all the names. There was the Cunningham guy that (SHOCK!) dared to use Obama's middle name. Then Hagee and Parsley. Then a few of his advisors because they had lobbying ties. Didn't he demote Rick Davis for some reason or other? I think there were a few more apologies thrown in there (maybe not fully exiled to "under the bus" status). I think Black got denounced for suggesting a terrorist attack would help McCain get elected.

The county I live in was once an industrial powerhouse on the I94 corridor. Now we’ve got nothing but retail, resturants and welfare with a 9% unemployment rate. Meanwhile next door in Ann Arbor the have about a 1% unemployment rate, course I think they’re mostly taxpayer funded city employees.

You have to cut your losses when something like that happens. McCain should have cashiered him last week.

Agreed. Having Sen. Gramm on his campaign gave the impression that he was intrested in deregulation, conservatism, smaller government, etc.

He can more easily go after the liberal vote now.

Also, while the economy may suck where you are at, you can’t apply that to everywhere in the country. Overall, the economy isn’t particularly bad.

Ann Arbor is an anomaly. I’d move back there in a heartbeat if I could, but I’d end up driving a taxi with the other Ph.D candidates.

Actually, he resigned and there was a special election for him to re-win the seat that he had held as a Democrat.

That’s class.

I recall Swiss banks were holding the gold taken from the Jews (including from their teeth). Didn’t they eventually have to surrender it?

It stands to reason that a nation full of people either on the dole, or in support of the dole for others, would also tend to ~whine~ to excess. What % of people in this country routinely vote to have their own liberties curtailed?

And, that Phil Gramm (and John McCain) helped make it this way, in the US Senate for however many years they sat there on their high horses, hasn’t really been discussed: that doesn’t surprise me, either.

That I do not know. Nor is it relevant to this discussion.

Juan Hernandez and Lindsey “Light in the Loafers” Graham are still with the McCampaign...
