McCain camp portrays Obama as stumping in Europe
Politico ^ | July 17, 2008 | Jonathan Martin

Signaling how they intend to frame their attacks next week against a globe-trotting Barack Obama, John McCain's campaign is suggesting that the Democratic nominee's popularity abroad may not translate well in middle America and that his trip amounts to a foreign photo-opportunity.

"I don't know that people in Missouri are going to like seeing tens of thousands of Europeans screaming for The One," quipped a McCain aide, deploying a moniker some in the campaign use to poke fun at Obama's exalted status in certain quarters. McCain is stumping today in Kansas City, Mo.

"This isn't about reaching out to allies or strengthening relationships; this is about advancing a political agenda," said the aide.

Obama is to visit a series of European and Middle Eastern capitals with an enlarged travelling press and has carved out time along the way or separate interviews with each of the three network anchors.

McCain himself has taken three trips abroad since claiming the GOP nomination earlier this year, mixing television interviews with made-for-the-camera stops at such politically valuable locales as Jerusalem's Wailing Wall and Mexico City's Basilica of Guadalupe. But his campaign says there is a difference.

"When John McCain goes on foreign trips, he is legitimately going on fact-finding missions to learn new information," said an aide. "He doesn't give huge campaign speeches overseas — he goes to inform his worldview."

Though plans for no such event has been released, U.S. and German published reports have indicated that the Illinois senator's campaign has inquired about speaking at Berlin's famed Brandenburg Gate. For security purposes, details of the journey have been kept largely under wraps.

Obama's campaign said McCain, who has repeatedly slammed his rival for not having been to Iraq in two years, is trying to have it both ways.

Rush calls him "The Messiah"

McCain's spokesperson call him "The One." You will be hearing that name on the talk shows from now on and it won't be a term of endearment. This is its origin.

Obama wants to see what creeping Sharia looks like before he brings it back to America. Plus it may be his last chance to see Europe before it’s under total Islamic rule.

Of course, McCain in Mexico City and Colombia probably isn’t much different.

Actually, I think the origin of that term is Oprah. Her marketing and PR team must have worked for months to develop the term that would most resonate with depressed shut-in housefraus.

Obama is a big government socialist modelled after the European type - do you need any more proof?

I went to the McCain townhall in KC yesterday. He is very impressive in his style and approach. Regarding Obama. The radio media after McCain’s visit called Obama-Dr. No.

So McCain has some impact after a visit. No Drilling, No this and No that!

I actually know people who say that europe’s support of Obama is a big reason to vote for him.

Again that would be like lettng the Astros manager make out the Cubs lineup for tonight’s game.

I just posted this at another thread (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2047398/posts):

I happened onto the Fox live link at McCain’s town hall meeting at GM. I’m no big fan, but I have to say I’m impressed at his taking on all comers with regard to any questions (economy, drilling, Iraq, etc.). He’ll take a question from the audience, answer it and turn back to the person asking and ask if they have a follow-up! So even if I disagree with some of his positions, I have to hand it to him for engaging in a back and forth dialog with voters, some not so friendly. He’d wipe Obama’s butt if they were together so its no wonder Obama doesn’t want any part of it.

Sounds like you came away with the same opinion. McCain certainly will have a better idea of heartland issues after listening and engaging with the voters if these aren't staged and questions vetted in advance.

Can you tell us about how you came to go to this? Open to the public or only registered Republicans? Did you have to get tickets in advance or just show up? What sort of instructions you were given for asking questions; were you given cards to fill out? etc.

“The One”. I first heard this reference in the movie, The Matrix.

Actually, you may be right. Never saw that movie, but was listening to Tammy Bruce in for Laura this morning (where is she?) and she mentioned its reference in the movie, too.

Actually, as Krauthammer’s column today points out, Obama himself is the origin of “the one”: “After all, in the words of his own slogan, “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for,” which, translating the royal “we,” means: “ I am the one we’ve been waiting for.”

The column is already posted here.

McCain in Mexico City and Colombia probably isn’t much different.

Except for the dearth of coverage and lack of being accompanied by all 3 network's #1 anchors...

Was up the street having icetea, reading my newspaper and listening to Tammy Bruce in for Laura ;

Tammy said Obama wants Americans to learn Spanish when he
doesn’t speak it himself.

Tammy then stated, Why learn Spanish when English in the
language of commerce and business and Spanish is the language for gardening -—— this is when I almost spit
out my icetea laughing because this is True.

I know what she's saying, but she's toast as a sub for Laura and maybe for her own show, too!!

I was there too. There was an email and newspaper ads, also local talk radio gave out info on the townhall event. I RSVP'd but it wasn't required, the lady I sat by walked in off the street. The questions were off the cuff. I do think a couple were possibly pre-screened but the majority were just chosen from the audience by McCain.

I went in expecting to be disgusted and annoyed, I wasn't. He was genuine and honest, or a very good actor. I came away feeling I had more in common with him then I had thought.

I don't want McCain for President, but I will now vote for him believing he is a good man, not a strong Conservative, but a good American who cares about the country. And he is much better than the socialist/marxist alternative.
