I agree that they are an embarrassment, but they're not Christians. This is NOT what the Lord would have them do. In fact, it's just the opposite. We are supposed to comfort people who are grieving. They're using the Lord's name to futher their own agenda.

I’m not a Baptist either, but it’s unfortunate that your particular denomination has its name associated with this kind of thing. I think most don’t really place any meaning on Phelps identifying himself as “Baptist”. I hear much from this group claiming to be able to “pass judgement” on others regarding eternal damnation. Crazy is the operative word. Why picket Snow's funeral? Why picket Russert's funeral? Or Boy Scout funerals or Amish kid's funerals or soldier funerals? Or stores that sell Swedish appliances (which they've done in the past)? They've found a raw nerve and they delight in sticking a needle into it so that they can get the publicity.

I don't know, but you don't have to be a part of a Baptist convention to be a Baptist church. Anyone can set themselves up as a Baptist church so long as they claim to follow the core beliefs. Phelps' crew describe Westboro as a primitave Baptist church following Calvinist principles. Most everyone else describes them as a buch of lunatics.

Phelps and his ilk are not worth going to prison for life. I think a very, very quiet spring piston air rifle from a nearby cluster of shrubs would be appropriate...most of them are, after all, marketed for "pest control."
