A Rochester native has filed a civil lawsuit against an Arab sheik who was convicted of beating him in the bar of a posh hotel in Geneva, Switzerland.
In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in San Diego, Calif., Silvano D. Orsi asks for an unspecified monetary amount from Sheik Falah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for past, present and future physical pain and suffering, mental anguish and loss of earning capacity.
A police tribunal last month convicted the sheik, a member of the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates, of inflicting "bodily harm with the use of a dangerous object" and ordered him to pay a fine of $9,820 for whipping Orsi with a belt at Hotel La Reserve on Aug. 19, 2003.
Orsi, 40, who lives in Gates, was an officer of a telecommunications company in Geneva. He said the sheik attacked him after he refused a bottle of champagne and the sheik's romantic advances.
Orsi said he is disabled by injuries he suffered in the attack, which include nerve damage, a herniated disc and post traumatic stress disorder.
The lawsuit was filed in California because the sheik owns a home there and frequently travels to it, said Orsi's lawyer, Anthony G. Buzbee of Galveston, Tex. Buzbee also represents a Texas businessman who advised the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates. Bassam Nablusi claims he was imprisoned and tortured in an attempt to get back videotapes allegedly showing the brother of Sheik Falah beating and torturing employees and people with whom he had business dealings.
"They don't recognize the rule of law because in their country, they are the law," Buzbee said.
The embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Washington, D.C. didn't respond to a request for comment.

The Shiek is "a member of the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates". That is why he is "above the law" in his own country.
I seriously doubt that the high-living, jet setting Shiek takes Islam or any other religion any more seriously than do the patrons of a San Francisco bath house. Sometimes an out-of-control degenerate is merely an out-of-control degenerate.
Because, when you are at war, the fact that your allies line up at the local whorehouse, thereby outraging the chaplain, is much less important than the military mission.
It's all about massaging language and whitewashing history when it comes to our government's relationship with the mohammedans.
"Religion of Peace?" Anyone who utters such nonsense knows nothing of what happened at Jerusalem before the Crusades started. Anyone who utters such nonsense doesn't know the story of Constantinople. In other words, anyone who says Islam is a Religion of Peace is totally ignorant of past history and current affairs.
That said, Islam was founded on rape, murder, drugs, revenge, theft, destruction, assault, deceit, molestation and a litany of other horrible sins. It is an absolute abomination of what God has in store for mankind. Mohammed was a horrible person who committed heinous crimes toward people, and his followers do not formally recognize his atrocities today.
In fact, many of them praise such horrific behavior, which is why they pro-actively murder Americans, Jews and other innocent people in order to promote the Caliphate (World domination under Islam).
But because these demented people happen to be sitting on some of the world's strongest oil reserves, the governments of the world must pander to a group of people that worship a murderer and child molester. It's a sick reality that we will continue to see until America removes itself from the Arab oil market.
Exactly. However everytime you hear about someone from a Muslim country it’s about the “religion of peace”.
I don’t suppose that every time there was an article on hear about an abortion or murder in this country by someone that they would say “Hmmm Christianity obviously a religion of peace.”
I hope he sues the sheik for everything he has.
Sexual advances... jeez
People in this country seldom do evil things “in the name of Christianity”. There are exceptions, of course, there always are.
However, people in Muslim countries REGULARLY do evil things “in the name of Islam”. It is a common occurence.
There is a BIG difference.
He may very well have just signed his own death warrant.

1. Location they were both in a location where a romantic advance could be made.
2. The Arab saw something he liked and made the advance.
3. The guy rejected the advance but still got beat up.
I don't know about you but I'll go just about anywhere and I don't think too many guys are going to make a pass at me. And if they do they are not going to beat me with a belt because I refused.
A lot of Arabs would drop down to Khartoum in the 80s to have a few drinks in the local Hotels. Good Muslims, one and all, as long as they were at home.
