Brit Hume, a top anchor and executive with Fox News since the channel was launched 12 years ago, plans to step down at year's end. But he won't disappear entirely.
Sources familiar with the situation say that Hume, 65, will give up his job as Washington managing editor and anchor of "Special Report." They say he is near a deal to continue with Fox in a senior statesman role, not unlike that of Tom Brokaw at NBC, for roughly 100 days a year.
In his new role, Hume would be a senior political analyst, substitute for Chris Wallace as host of "Fox News Sunday" and anchor special events.
A former ABC correspondent who never hid his conservative views in his mainstream media days, Hume has been a central part of Fox's success. He has anchored on election nights and at political conventions and moderated a number of presidential debates. Hume has enjoyed good access to top Bush administration officials; when Vice President Cheney was under intense criticism after accidentally shooting a hunting companion two years ago, he did one interview, with Hume.
Fox News chairman Roger Ailes has made no decision on whether "Special Report," which began as a temporary program during the Clinton impeachment, will continue, or who would anchor it if it does, the sources said.

Brit. Not two t’s.
Where is Neal Cavuto? He hasn’t been on for 2 weeks. I hope it isn’t because of his health.
“....No kidding I’ll be 62 in 9 days and he looks 20 years younger than me....”
Powder and paint makes an anchor what he ain’t!
;-)
Sorry to hear that Hume is semi retiring. He’s one of if not the finest on TV, at least he’ll still be there in some capacity.
LOL. Your judgement is skewed in this matter.
I hope to God they don’t replace him with Shemp. I would never watch it again.
The end of FOX.
This is only my 2 cents but here it goes...
Megyn is NOT just eye candy (as some here might posit). She is an insightful woman with a keen ability to ferret out idiots when allowed to do so in interviews. IF FOX has brains, they’d allow her to go solo, get away from that horrible “story an instant” format with the male talking head as compadre, and let her just go for it.
I think she could attract a wide audience and will be a star at some point. She does seem to have conservative views and presents them in a no nonsense way...
Frank
I've been concerned about him too - hope it's not a setback in his battle against MS. I love Cavuto.
“I didnt realize he was that old.”
And for while, John Kerry’s room mate in college.
Brit is the only one I watch on FOX. When he leaves, Fox will be watched very little in my home.

I love Megyn’s segment with Lis Wiehl on O’Reilly’s show. They are both great, and The Big O just looks giddy to be refereeing these two beautiful blonde ladies.
I don’t watch TV news at all, but from what I’ve heard Fox was actually underutilizing Brit already. He’s by far the best they’ve got, but they never gave him a prime time slot where he could have gotten more viewers.
Conservatives all speak of him as the best on Fox, and the transcripts here certainly confirm it. Well, one bad piece of news after another. What with Russert, the only decent liberal left, and then Tony Snow.
Well, there goes the only reason to still watch Fox News.
What is John Gibson doing these days?
That's blasphemy to mention him in the same thread as the anchor master Brit Hume.
Shepard Smith should be anchor on "Days of Our Lives".
Don’t forget plunging necklines.
Cavuto, occasionally.
