Brit Hume, a top anchor and executive with Fox News since the channel was launched 12 years ago, plans to step down at year's end. But he won't disappear entirely.
Sources familiar with the situation say that Hume, 65, will give up his job as Washington managing editor and anchor of "Special Report." They say he is near a deal to continue with Fox in a senior statesman role, not unlike that of Tom Brokaw at NBC, for roughly 100 days a year.
In his new role, Hume would be a senior political analyst, substitute for Chris Wallace as host of "Fox News Sunday" and anchor special events.
A former ABC correspondent who never hid his conservative views in his mainstream media days, Hume has been a central part of Fox's success. He has anchored on election nights and at political conventions and moderated a number of presidential debates. Hume has enjoyed good access to top Bush administration officials; when Vice President Cheney was under intense criticism after accidentally shooting a hunting companion two years ago, he did one interview, with Hume.
Fox News chairman Roger Ailes has made no decision on whether "Special Report," which began as a temporary program during the Clinton impeachment, will continue, or who would anchor it if it does, the sources said.

I understand Hume’s desire to cut back on his work hours. The media will be much poorer for it though. As far as I’m concerned, he’s the most trusted man in the country.
Good for Brit. His semi-retirement is a loss to journalism — but nobody deserves it more.
H
Cavuto is pretty good. But beyond Brit and Neil, it’s pretty thin, pretty quick.
Oh darn it. I can’t imagine anyone who could fill his shoes.
Just darn!
Oh no! It’s the only news show I care to watch anymore.
Shep Smith...his sarcasm alone is worth the price of admission. Megyn Kelly is the other reason. She is awesome.
Too bad. Brit is the best in the business.
I’m going to be sorry to see him go!
The death of Tony Snow has shook both Brett and Brit to the core methinks.
LOL! True, and it's usually about something stupid like Madonna or Oprah.
I believe Brit to be the most honest human in the news business.
Oh I wouldn't say that. First of all Brit has been taking Fridays off for a long time now and a lot of extended vacations also. Plus, Bret Baer is a young good replacement in my opinion. Don't know about his conservative bonafides but he seems well balanced. It also said Brit will be hosting Fox News Sunday on occasion and that should be good although I always liked him on the panel where he could speak his mind more. All in all though I wish him well and hope this gives him more time to spend with his family or to pursue other pursuits.
I love to see Britt put Juan in his place.
My favorite guy! I would never have guessed Brit Hume is 65—he looks more like 50. What a shock! I’ve often wondered how he could keep his cool when Juan Williams made one of his stupid statements
I always enjoyed the fact that Clinton ejected Brit from the White House press corps and that Brit ended up on Fox News!
Another real gentleman and a very classy guy. He went thru the tragedy of losing his son and now Tony Snow; his heart must be very heavy.
I met him eons ago when he came to my college for a special seminar (believe he was with ABC then). He was just as facinating then with his “fair and balanced” approach. I sure will miss him.
“former ABC correspondent who never hid his conservative views in his mainstream media days”
Translation...he’s one of the few honest journalists out there.
Now who’s going to bitch-slap Juan Williams Sunday morining?
Former and current ABC/NBC/CBS anchors Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, Perky Katie and others never hid their liberal views in their mainstream media days, while, at the same time, expressing their opinion that the media is not biased.
