Brit Hume to Step Down From Fox News
The Washington Post ^ | Tuesday, July 15, 2008 | Howard Kurtz

Posted on 07/15/2008 12:35:37 PM PDT by kristinn

Brit Hume, a top anchor and executive with Fox News since the channel was launched 12 years ago, plans to step down at year's end. But he won't disappear entirely.

Sources familiar with the situation say that Hume, 65, will give up his job as Washington managing editor and anchor of "Special Report." They say he is near a deal to continue with Fox in a senior statesman role, not unlike that of Tom Brokaw at NBC, for roughly 100 days a year.

In his new role, Hume would be a senior political analyst, substitute for Chris Wallace as host of "Fox News Sunday" and anchor special events.

A former ABC correspondent who never hid his conservative views in his mainstream media days, Hume has been a central part of Fox's success. He has anchored on election nights and at political conventions and moderated a number of presidential debates. Hume has enjoyed good access to top Bush administration officials; when Vice President Cheney was under intense criticism after accidentally shooting a hunting companion two years ago, he did one interview, with Hume.

Fox News chairman Roger Ailes has made no decision on whether "Special Report," which began as a temporary program during the Clinton impeachment, will continue, or who would anchor it if it does, the sources said.

All the good ones are disappearing - Tony Snow, Brit Hume, John Gibson, E. D. Hill and Neil Cavuto and nothing is ever said on Fox News.

Of Course, Tony Snow has died but he disappeared from Fox News Sunday and was replaced by Chris Wallace without any real explanation.

Strange. It's the only "hard news" show on FNC. ...and by far the best.

I have been a faithful watcher of Special Report since it first began, and I will sure miss him when he retires. I don't think it will be the same without him.

Usually these people go on until they are into their 80's. I'm surprised he is retiring so early.

Special Report is the best news show on TV. I hope they continue it, but it won’t be as good without Brit to run it.

I believe Tony left TV because he wanted to pursue his dream of talk radio.

I'll never forget Brit's hours-long commentary when President Reagan died.

It was amazing.

Brit had a range and depth of ideas and words that were keeping me entranced for hours during those remarkable few days.

Here's to hoping that Brit will return with more influence albeit fewer hours in years to come.

I noticed the conservative reference too. Kurtz is such a puffed up twit.

Britt Hume Is FOX NEWS.

In memorializing Tony Snow, Brit said that Tony was FOX News before there WAS a Fox News. It's fair to say, as you did, that Brit Hume IS Fox News, and will always be. Pure class.

Good for Brit. His semi-retirement is a loss to journalism — but nobody deserves it more.

After seeing Tim Russert and Tony Snow essentially "Die in the saddle", you can't blame Brit for wanting to ease out of the business and enjoy his twilight years.

“I’ll never forget Brit’s hours-long commentary when President Reagan died.”

Yes, and I’ll never forget the first FNS after 9/11. Both Brit and Tony were holding back tears. Tony’s tears came when he did his usual end-of-the-show commentary.

I love these two guys.

Wonder if Brit will do the eulogy at Tony’s funeral later this week.

The genius of Brit Hume was that he could really claim to be a Washington insider having prep schooled with the likes of Albert Gore. But just because he knew the ins and out of Washington as well as anyone, did not mean that offered a world view or commentary which reflected your typical MSM Washington insider whore.

Where is Neal Cavuto? He hasn’t been on for 2 weeks. I hope it isn’t because of his health.

His Sunday show said he was on vacation. I hope his MS isn't acting up.

I take back everything I said about his suit situation. Oh, it’s going to be a sad day, Neo.

Neal Cavuto is the only other person I enjoy watching on FOX. Just dang.

Thanks for pinging me!
