Ulterior motives crossed my mind. What if he’s genuinely a conservative guy who doesn’t want to get tarred with the baggage of losing an election because the party has moved so far left?

The writing was on the wall months ago, so the timing for me is questionable.

I’d like to see Congressman BillyBob come off the bench and take it too Heath.

John Armour would be a great representative for that Congressional district, and would more clearly reflect the district’s prevailing conservative political
philosophy.

Better to let Heath Schuler win another term, making him pretty much invincible forever.

Since he suspended his campaign does the party have any right to replace him?

Mumpower explains it in his own words this morning in an audio interview on Youtube.

Oh yea, that is going to do a lot of good.. one less Conservative in office, leaning everything left.. Surprised the drama queen didn't just endorse his Dem rival.

Not if you assume that he is fed up with conservatives being ignored by the GOP and wants to send a message in a way that it can not be ignored. His approach is a bit dramatic perhaps, but less more likely to draw attention to his concerns.

No kidding. Odds are he knew he was going to get his “Impeach Bush” ass handed to him in the election.

You frickin’ idiots that are opposing this man should be applauding him. He is doing what many conservatives are doing about McCain, not running and not voting for a non conservative republican party. Don’t like it? Then force the party to move toward the right, where they should be anyway. Hurray, for this man!

He’s taking a ballot position and not running a campaign. That is dishonest and does not provide voters with an alternative. If he’s disgusted with the national GOP, he could either (a)run his own agressive campaign and disown the GOP except for the ballot position he has won or (b)invite the party to replace him by running a third party campaign.

This is either grandstanding or the man is a fool. McCain was the Republican nominee long before the NC primary. If he was so offended why did he run in the first place?

A real conservative would run and fight to take back the party as an elected conservative congressman. Sounds like the voters of this district are lucky this Jesse Ventura wannabe dropped out.

Seems stupid to me. If he wants the Republican party to change, he’s gonna need to be apart of it, otherwise he’ll just be irrelevant.

Withholding support does not move the party. Conservatives gave up their influence on Presidential election by rejecting McCain in favor of anyone else. They failed to defeat McCain, and they’ve sent nasty letters, emails, and everything but money to McCain. Now its too late to turn that around because McCain has $32 million in the bank(against Osama’s $43 Million) McCain has to spend it and what ever he raises until the convention, before the convention. Because McCain took government financing, he can only spend the taxpayer financed $85 M from convention to general election. Even if conservatives wanted to show their support with money McCain doesn’t need it. Losing conservatives has not harmed McCain and may win the center and the Presidency.

The RNC has $54M to the DNC’s $4M. McCain has been doing fundraisers where he is asking for $28,500 a plate. McCain can’t accept more than $2,300 (after the convention he could even keep the $2,300) the rest is going into the RNC, and that money will be spent on McCain. That gives McCain/RNC an almost 2 to 1 cash on hand advantage over Osama/DNC.

Unfortunately for GOP congressmen, the conservatives have not only rejected McCain but they forgot to support conservatives in the House (DCCC $47M - NRCC $7M) and the Senate ( DSCC $39M - NRSC $22M.) rats now sit in the seats of JD Hayworth, John Hostettler, Dennis Hastert, Tom Delay, and Rick Santorum. The danger for conservatives if Republicans stay home is McCain will still win but the GOP will lose more seats in the congress and this will force McCain to move further left to get legislation passed by the new Congress. McCain centrist policy will become the new far right conservatism. If Osama wins, a New Fairness Doctrine will eliminate talk radio and shut down political web sites. Conservatives, like a beaten wife, will shuffle back to the GOP when we nominate Susan Collins in 2012.

This was the race I ran in. I've been reluctant to say anything in public about Carl Mumpower. But I did say to the Republican 11th District Convention, just before the primary, that the Party would be in trouble if it nominated a candidate who turned himself into a public joke.

I leave it to others to decide whether that is what Mumpower has just done, with this latest gambit. What think you?

In the words of George Will, “Nothing comes to those that sulk.” This guy is working for the Dems, not conservatives and not Republicans. If he cared about the country, he’d keep going, win the seat, and help change the Party from within.
