Ya can't make it up (New Yorker Obama Cover)
Politico ^ | July 13, 2008 | Mike Allen

Posted on 07/13/2008 3:32:05 PM PDT by Vision

The New Yorker says it’s satire. It certainly will be candy for cable news.

At a press availability Sunday afternoon in San Diego, Senator Obama was asked, according to the diligent Maria Gavrilovic of CBS News: “The upcoming issue of the New Yorker, the July 21st issue, has a picture of you, depicting you and your wife on the cover. Have you seen it? If not, I can show it to you on my computer. It shows your wife Michelle with an Afro and an AK 47 and the two of you doing the fist bump with you in a sort of turban-type thing on top. I wondered if you’ve seen it or if you want to see it or if you have a response to it?”

Obama (shrugs incredulously): “I have no response to that.”

Priceless stage direction by Maria.

The magazine explains at the start of its news release previewing the issue: “On the cover of the July 21, 2008, issue of the The New Yorker, in ‘The Politics of Fear,’ artist Barry Blitt satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama’s campaign.”

I’m sure Senator Obama is oh-so appreciative for The New Yorker’s help.

Come on. I am very cynical, but don’t think for a moment that this went out with the approval of the Obama campaign. They are trying desperately to move to the center. The last thing in the world they want is for someone to stoke these fears, even through satire. Part of what you say may be true: that the politicos talk to the mag writers and report how all the bumpkins in Middle America perceive Obama, but that’s as far as it goes.

“Are those human limbs in the fireplace?”

“They look to me like big strips of BACON.”

You have got to be kidding. It is the American Flag.

Did the movie “Wag the Dog” hurt Clinton?

Clinton wasn’t up for relection when “Wag the Dog” came out. One thing that did hurt the Dems in 1994, was “Forrest Gump”, with its portrayal of the anti-war Left. I can’t prove it, but I really believe that movie helped stoke the fire that gave the Republicans their Congressional majority. It was simple Forrest Gump vs. Slick Willie, and Forrest won.

Really.

Your mistake is that it's not satire. It's black propaganda.

What you say could be possible if the cartoon were buried on page 87. A magazine cover is chosen very very carefully; it's not an accident, and it's not a surprise.

I will agree that it may be too clever by half, and backfire.

Focus Group is the term I couldn’t think of....thanks.

I disagree with your assessment of the outcome though.

It will give the Obama campaign terrific market information.

This could be a watershed moment in Obama’s decline...when they discover who’s still standing after the heated debate on the cover is over.

If I were the artist, I could sure as hell defend it.
But thank God for Freedom of Speech and the Press.

I love when they play the “it’s just satire” card. Good satire does not need to be explained.

Actually, I didn't make any prognostication. My opinion is that this is too clever by half, and that it's as likely to backfire as succeed. Actually, I think there are a lot of (heads-up-their-@sses) people who know nothing whatsoever about Obama's radical associations at this stage of the campaign, and this presents the opportunity to bring them out. The questions is: will the RNC be able to capitalize on it? McCain certainly won't.

I agree McCain handcuffed himself already by responding that it was tasteless and offensive.

He should have said, “No Comment”!

But then it would be construed as going negative....

Oh well! ;^)

Clinton wasn’t up for relection when “Wag the Dog” came out."

Correct. He was up for bombing Yugoslav just before impeachment.

Of course, this could be crypto-shilling, done under the assumption that the liberal shill sheet won’t be remembered, just the hit job it did, making Obama look like he’s *not* favored by the media, when it has been oh-so-obvious that he is and has been right along.
