The New Yorker says its satire. It certainly will be candy for cable news.
At a press availability Sunday afternoon in San Diego, Senator Obama was asked, according to the diligent Maria Gavrilovic of CBS News: The upcoming issue of the New Yorker, the July 21st issue, has a picture of you, depicting you and your wife on the cover. Have you seen it? If not, I can show it to you on my computer. It shows your wife Michelle with an Afro and an AK 47 and the two of you doing the fist bump with you in a sort of turban-type thing on top. I wondered if youve seen it or if you want to see it or if you have a response to it?
Obama (shrugs incredulously): I have no response to that.
Priceless stage direction by Maria.
The magazine explains at the start of its news release previewing the issue: On the cover of the July 21, 2008, issue of the The New Yorker, in The Politics of Fear, artist Barry Blitt satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obamas campaign.
Im sure Senator Obama is oh-so appreciative for The New Yorkers help.
The lib artist wouldn't know the difference, or care.
It could turn out to have historic significance, like the daisy-child in 1964.
Looks like the American Flag to me as well.
Satire my foot. They know that 90% of the people who see this cover will just take it as The New Yorker’s POV. The highbrow left just shot a torpedo at Obama.
Ya can't make it up (Obama in turban and Michelle w/ Afro toting AK-47 on The New Yorker cover)

From what I understand the artist's real intent was to satirize people like you (and me)! :-)
Notice that his “left” foot is standing on the American Eagle’s throat

Each picture sums up the loser quite nicely.
Didn’t notice that. Perfect.
Please get with it.
The advert, profile, focus group, and image people working for Obama live and usually work within walking distance of the cartoonists, writers and editors for the New Yorker. They go to the same parties and have drinks (and sex) with each others wives and/or boyfriends. This cartoon is part of the makeover Obama is currently enjoying by virtue of his -- completely unchallenged -- move to the center. This cover will generate gazillions of dollars in free publicity and was undoubtedly timed to go on sale and was thoroughly vetted and coordinated by Obama's people. The best thing you could do is ignore it. It's not a cheap shot at Obama. It's the furthest thing from that. It's also not simply making fun of people like us. It's an attempt to draw the uncommitted into the "kewl kidz kamp" by getting them to identify with how ridiculous it is to portray these nice middle American folks as leftists or race baiters.
Its all part of the BIG SHOW.
Did the movie "Wag the Dog" hurt Clinton? All of this is truth as fiction before the election. Soon it is "old loonie toons right wing conspiracy stuff".
These guys are experts at propaganda.

Finally somebody who gets it. See post #92.
And Obamao voted to ban Ak-47’s....
Spot on Cartoon, notice the sly look the Obamao is giving over his “left” shoulder?
are you a frat man?

Of course that is the reason, they would certainly all be Obama supporters there.
But I think they made a mistake doing this and it will hurt their guy Obama.
I will buy my first copy of the New Yorker.
It could turn out to have historic significance, like the daisy-child in 1964.
