Straight Talk At Last From McCain Gramm

Economy: Barack Obama is making hay out of McCain adviser Phil Gramm's unpolitic claim that "we've sort of become a nation of whiners." But Gramm is right that America's economic stature is underappreciated.

Gramm, a former senator from Texas, is a Democrat-turned-Republican who was a pivotal figure in making Ronald Reagan's economic policies a reality. The Gramm-Rudman automatic budget-cutting mechanism worked beautifully in the 1980s until Congress dismantled it.

When Gramm gave a videotaped Q&A to the Washington Times last week, his sophisticated insights on America's economic role in the world were just what you would expect.

Unfortunately, Gramm, for the last year an economic adviser to John McCain, topped it off with a throwaway remark about us being "a nation of whiners" who don't realize what fundamental good shape we're in globally. Not surprisingly, Obama and other Democrats have jumped all over the ill-considered one-liner.

"We're in the midst of an export boom in manufacturing," Gramm pointed out. China and India's populations entering the global work force "greatly increased the supply of labor," and "almost everything Americans buy from China" is produced by American manufacturers utilizing Chinese workers.

The availability of so much new labor has meant that with America holding 60% of the world's capital, we have been huge beneficiaries, he added.

I’ve always respected Gramm. He did a lot for us during the Reagan years.

We could do worse than a McCain/Gramm ticket. And I’m sure we will, LOL!

What Gramm said was taken out of context. If you listened to more than a short sound byte, you got it.

That said, Gramm should know that the MSM is just waiting to slice and dice.

"Hard to spin when economically, things are crumbling."

He certainly chose a less than optimal time to make that statement considering the latest mortgage-banking crisis that has followed in the aftermath.

Advisors to presidential candidates are not supposed to become the news as Gramm did. I do not think it is wise to have Senators as advisors, these boys just have too huge an ego to be a team player and to put their emotions under wraps for the good of the candidate. John Kerry has not done Barry any good either as far as that goes. The Senate is a club of treacherous and stupid egomanical political hacks, when you are member of that elitist club yourself do not depend on other elitists to say politically popular things. When Gramm made the remark about whiners, that was your typical egomanical elitist remark. That is what the Senate is all about we be smarter than idiotic electorate.

Instead of making girly man excuses, it would be nice
to see a candidate “lean into” an attack and say...

“Darn straight we’re a nation of whiners. Look at you
whining about Phil Gramm saying you’re a whiner.”

Say it! Don’t back down. It’s the truth. Just say it!

There was a video yesterday at the PMSNBC site.

I saw it last night when I flipped channels after The First 48.

MCCain better hope the RATs don’t decide to use that video.

Really.

Problem with the GOP globalist and free traitors is they view the economy from a Wall Street big picture level. The US GDP grew under free trade, and at the surface it looks very good. But free trade also has caused regional dislocation of whole small towns and communities. Add the Wall Street inspired borrow money to invest/or purchase schemes (hedge funds, credit cards and now loans against ones remaining asset 401K plans) to tempt the American consumer we are seeing the fruits (rotten fruit) of our personal and government burrow and buy mentality. If our elites on Wall Street are doing it, why not the politicians or vice versa. If the US survives this self inflicted crisis we will see new attitudes towards Wall Street, and US investment merchants. The people will demand new government policies and regs to rein them in. Our period of deregulated free market enterprise is over because there has been too many disruptions and scandals caused by hands off government and close relation between investment merchants and elected reps lobbied to look the other way. If the free marketeer is complaining, they have no one to blame but themselves and their immoral approach to free markets. Offering loans to people without documentation in order to earn commissions and selling it to re mortgaging companies, offering credit cards to anyone including college students with no income and now offering loans to tapped out consumers against their only asset left, their 401k plan. The madness has to stop, officials need to be held accountable and the immoral investment merchant class need to be rounded up, tried, and if found guilty, shot.

Never mind, although it stil may be on that site. I got your post mixed up with the one with McCain trying to answer the news babe about birth control and insurance companies. You do not want to see that.

Terrible, just terrible. Worse than a deer in the headlights moment.

I know. Its “I want free health care” and “I want cheap gas but no drilling”. However, I do understand that there are certain sectors of the economy which are in damn near upheaval right now and many are feeling the pinch.
