When I was a young man in school, Latin was for the smarter kids. I was not one of them. To my regret.

Latin is much too hard and “antiquated” for todays children. Not to mention being “too white”.

Then there is also the American art of "junk politics," especially as practiced by the Republicans

Some examples of below the belt politics as practiced by republicans:

• That horrid commercial where a girl supposed to be James Bird's daughter accused George Bush's politics as the same as Bird's horrid murder ... saying how it feels like re-killing her father over and over and over.
• Those last second leaks that George Bush had been arrested for DUI when he was 18 just days prior to the 2000 election.
• Those faked letter that supposedly showed Bush was AWOL during his National Guard stint and hinted it was because of cocaine abuse.
• Comments about how a woman who accused Clinton of unethical behavior (subsequently substantiated) was just trailer trash trawling for a a buck.
• Leaks from unnamed sources that trashed the reputation and careers of Bob Livingston
• Endless portrayals of Newt Gingrich as a heartless scum who wanted to sneak into your kinds rooms and put a pillow over their faces while they slept, including the one characterizing him as "the Gingrich that stole Christmas".

Well, those were all done by Democrats but when you think about it, Republicans do play a role in this stuff ... they are the victim of it! I'm so sick of the left just throwing it out there that they practice a style of noble and clean politics and have to fight off smear tactics from the right. Sheesh!

IMHO, it is Latin that should be required in schools again.

I agree. I went to high school in a small town in the midwest in the early 60s - two years of Latin was a required college prep course. It's the basis for most English words, and is a great mental discipline.
