Nothing is out of whack with the sun, a NASA researcher said this week, despite some scientists' suggestions that a lull in the weather there lately is unusually long, a phenomenon linked to at least one small ice age.

"There have been some reports lately that solar minimum is lasting longer than it should. That's not true," said NASA solar physicist David Hathaway. The ongoing lull in sunspot numbers "is well within historic norms for the solar cycle."

The only thing “out of whack” is Hathaway’s predictions!!!

Backward Sunspot Could Fortell Enormous Solar Cycle
“We’ve been waiting for this,” says David Hathaway, a solar physicist at the Marshall Space Flight in Huntsville, Alabama. “A backward sunspot is a sign that the next solar cycle is beginning.”

ENORMOUS???!!!! :p
No no no... that’s a Nick Knack Pat’a’whack.
That’s a little different from a plain old “out of whack” instance.
Off topic (or not): One of the funniest things I've seen was a couple camped across a small lake from where my troop camped in the Sierras back when I was a Boy Scout. Those two were enjoying the lake au naturale for most of the first day after they arrived. Of course, as a bunch of adolescent boys, we were snickering about their bare butts going in and out of the water. Then, about 4 hours later, we noticed that their butts were much, much redder than they had been earlier. We didn't see much of them the next day as we noted that the UV is much more intense at higher elevations.
Well then... this old man’s going rolling home!
Well, I didn't want to mention your typeface.
Me too. Are they saying the sun is whack now? Are they switching to ebonics these days?

from spaceweather has a red-blue 3-D Mars image, anaglyph, showing where a rock has moved through the dust and left a channel. I finally got a pair of the 3-D glasses because spaceweather is posting these 3-D images frequently.

How would we give the sun a bone?
Throw Mecca at it?
That’s a turd!
Does the Sun do a magnetic pole reversal before a new Solar Cycle begins?
Maybe that is what is effecting Earth’s magnetic field right now.
Oh.
Not a good idea to tick off the sun, eh?
How about Mercury.
We are not using it right now.
Yes the sun does that
Obiviously, the same way that we're "fixing" Global WarmingTM: Give other countries the authority to tax US Citizens via the UN, then give the money to China, add "Solar Minimum" regulations of various flavors to every conceivable industry and blame the whole mess on Bush.
That's how problems are fixed in these parts.
Interesting. Perhaps this was more critical than he thought. From article:
‘New-cycle sunspots almost always pop up at mid-latitudes, around 30N or 30S. The backward sunspot popped up at 13S. “That’s strange.”’
So, unexpected behavior followed by unexpected behavior. I feel less concerned about this minimum, but another important aspect is that the longer and weaker this cycle is, the weaker the next one is expected to be. Most likely the global cooling trend of the last ten years will continue. We’ll have to keep watching the solar behavior to see how things play out in the end.
I also remain concerned that modern sunspot numbers are inflated compared to historical numbers due to better observing instruments.
Liberals have one thing going for them I guess.....all their BS forces me to look up facts about things like science, that I am not naturally good at.
Were there more earth quakes, volcanos, etc., at the last Solar Minimum?
Hathaway is correct if by “historic” he means the complete solar cycle record since the 17th century. If, however, we look at just the last 4-5 cycles, things are a bit grimmer. Cycle 24 may be as low as cycle 14 back in the early 20th century when the world population was only 1.75 billion. Now that we have an additional 5 billion mouths to feed, a low cycle could lead to global cooling that will drastically affect the harvest of essential grains around the world. Starvation may be the fate of hundreds of millions over the next 20 years since cycle 25 is supposed to be the lowest cycle in centuries based on information we have about the sun’s conveyor belt.
Wow, I need more sleep.
“Does the Sun do a magnetic pole reversal before a new Solar Cycle begins?
February 15, 2001 — You can’t tell by looking, but scientists say the Sun has just undergone an important change. Our star’s magnetic field has flipped.
The Sun’s magnetic north pole, which was in the northern hemisphere just a few months ago, now points south. It’s a topsy-turvy situation, but not an unexpected one.
“This always happens around the time of solar maximum,” says David Hathaway, a solar physicist at the Marshall Space Flight Center. “The magnetic poles exchange places at the peak of the sunspot cycle. In fact, it’s a good indication that Solar Max is really here.”

The ‘Sunspots’ switch a solar minimum.
I’m just a lameman...just enjoy read about this stuff.
