If Barack Obama doesn't win November's presidential election in the United States, "you can kiss the Democratic Party goodbye", the actor and director Robert Redford told an audience in Dublin last night.
Speaking at a public interview in Trinity College in advance of his conferral with an honorary degree by the university today, Redford said he hoped Obama would win because while John McCain "represents yesterday", the Democrat embodied the sort of change America needed.
Asked by Michael Dwyer, film correspondent of The Irish Times , if he was looking forward to "regime change" in the US, Redford said: "Yes. Where my country is at the moment, I'm not confident of anything. I'm hopeful.
"I think Obama is not tall on experience . . . but I believe he's a really good person. He's smart. And he does represent what the country needs most now, which is change."
"I hope he'll win. I think he will. If he doesn't, you can kiss the Democratic Party goodbye . . . I think we need new voices, new blood. We need to get a whole group out, get a new group in."
The 71-year-old American is best known for his roles in Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid , The Sting and All The President's Men .
He won his first Oscar as a director for the emotional family drama Ordinary People in 1980.

I have to agree with Redford there ... for both parties.
Two, Redford sounds exactly like the parody played by Rush of an Obama ad. A Obama supporter says he supports Obama, because Obama is for the future. The future is like tomorrow, and not today. Yesterday is the past and is gone.
Three, should I take Redford's word that Obama is "smart"? The man's in danger without a teleprompter. And what purpose does a "smart" demagogue serve?
Four, Obama's a good person? Based on what evidence?
Oh c'mon Redford, just say what you mean, you Che Guevara loving leftist. He's a commie, and you're a commie, so you love him to death. Now go kneel in front of your Obama shrine and say a prayer to your new marxist god.
Robert Redford: The Electric Horses Ass
Wow ... Deep thoughts from Brad Pitt's mentor :)
It's funny (and scary) how easily they all conform to that message.
It's completely scary. They keep saying, "We need change!" but never tell anyone what the change is. The only thing I've got so far is faith based programs are good, or in other words, no change there.
I have to say that every time I hear them talking about change, I think of the South Park where they got invaded by the homeless and they were all walking around going, "Change? Change? Change?"
Hey, this punk helped us all slay the beast.
I hope he falls hard, but I thank him for his services against the Clintons.
Course he forever more will be looking over his shoulder, freightened.
Yeah, but not as good looking as Quayle.
Discuss current events, and political parties and movements? They haven't a clue! I have a good idea...I think private planes for actors should be banned! Just think of all the oil we'll save! All of the carbon dioxide that won't be let out in the air. Why shouldn't they be relegated to Public Airports, like the rest of us? I am tired of their silly comments about our great President and country. The kind of change Democrats offer, is not the kind of change Americans need.
Sit down and shut up old man!
Yessiree-bob, I ALWAYS take my political advice from washed-up, has-been, pretty boy actors!!!
What do you have left over when you find out he's really NOT a good person, Bobby?
Redford has aged about as well as Helen Thomas (due to the hour of the morning and some eating breakfast....I will post no pictures of comparison!)
What a great photo!! LOL!!!!
Well that settles it for me. I can rest easy because Robert Redford is backing Obama. Let’s hear from the rest of the plastic people now. Striesand, Cher, et al.
ROTFLMAO!!!!
Or should we be expecting an announcement that the Democratic Party may have to come out of the closet, and will take the cloak off it’s Communistic soul?
Robert Redford would never allow a makeup artist with no resume to work on him on a movie set. He would never tolerate amateur hour on a movie that he directs. He would only hire people based on merit and resumes
In 2000 and 2004 the Democrats got about 48% of the popular vote while running two of the most unlikeable people in public office today, Al Gore and John Kerry. At least both of them had years of experience (mediocre experience, to be sure, with little to show by way of accomplishments). Obama has far less experience, but he comes across as likeable. If he loses, the 'Rats won't disappear--the "rob Peter to pay Paul" party will still be able to count on the votes of all the Pauls (except maybe Ron Paul).
If Barack Obama does win November's presidential election in the United States, "you can kiss Democracy goodbye".
No.
She was as beautiful as ever.................
