RALEIGH, N.C. L.F. Eason III gave up the only job he'd ever had rather than lower a flag to honor former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms.
Eason, a 29-year veteran of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, instructed his staff at a small Raleigh lab not to fly the U.S. or North Carolina flags at half mast Monday as called for in a directive to all state agencies by Gov. Mike Easley.
When a superior ordered the lab to follow the order, Eason decided to retire rather than pay tribute to Helms. After several hours' delay, one of Eason's employees hung the flags at half mast.
The brouhaha began late Sunday night, when Eason e-mailed nine of his employees in the state Metrology Lab, which calibrates measuring equipment used on things as widely varied as gasoline and hamburgers.
"Regardless of any executive proclamation, I do not want the flags at the North Carolina Standards Laboratory flown at half staff to honor Jesse Helms any time this week," Eason wrote just after midnight, according to e-mails released in response to a public records request.
He told his staff that he did not think it was appropriate to honor Helms because of his "doctrine of negativity, hate and prejudice" and his opposition to civil rights bills and the federal Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

There are plenty of people who do not believe Rev. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, or Ceasar Chavez worthy of any kind of public recognition. But they still obey directives when employed by public entities.
This guy is snark. Probably hates President George Washington because he owned black slaves. What history overlooks is he also had white indentured slaves, for that is exactly what you were until having worked out your contract of however many years was involved.
Sadly, it looks like the just retired him. Should have taken that way...

The shadow government continues to operate as it sees fit on an unelected basis.
I will point out that he worked there 29 years. In many workplaces, 30 years is a magic number that triggers increased pension and benefits.
bye
It’ll be interesting to see how many Democrats who’ve cheered and done these sorts of things over Helms’ death will do the same when Robert Byrd (D-KKK) dies.
I’m assuming that retirement has to be approved? Delay it long enough to take some disciplinary action against him for refusing to obey the governor’s orders. Then let him go.
Guess what moron? It isn’t about you! You don’t own the place where you worked so you don’t get to make the rules. Geez, where do they find these idiots??!!!
Couldn’t happen to a more deserving loon. However, bet’s on that the total work output of that department won’t change one iota.
FYI, slavery should never be compared to indentured servitude. The two are not truly equivocal. Perhaps the most important distinction is that offspring of the indentured bear no penalty, while the offspring of a slave, is born into slavery.
Good point, he probably is at the “just bellow where retirement really pays off” point in government jobs. Good, he was an idiot, I hope every pay statement he gets in retirement reminds him of that.
I think I know why he never had a real job .
That pretty much tells you everything you need to know about this guy.
Lost his job?
Good deal.....
I am so tired of all these little buttholes that think the world revolves around them...
Sure his name wasn’t D.F. (for dumb f*** bigot) Eason?
Burger King beckons.
Such a small petty man...
