there is a wide divergence of opinion on FR, and many posters do seem to at times take positions or state views with little info (I am guilty of this at times), but it is important to remember that as a group, we are FAR better informed than the average voter.

If all your info is from newspapers, tv, and word-of-mouth, the scenario you describe is totally reasonable.

“I remember one 50-something year old man telling me that he was voting for McCain because he thought he was “patriotic enough to close our borders.”””

Why doesn’t this equate to the Democrats getting their asses handed to them this coming November???

Because we have no "America First" candidate. I'm convinced that Americans are sick of hearing how we spend our money supporting the ME dictators, the Muslims, illegal Mexicans, the Chinese, the UN and every stupid pork barrel project of our corrupt leaders. They want to hear that our leaders are working for us. If there's oil in the U.S. we will extract it for the good of Americans, just like every other country does. If illegal aliens are costing us billions we will seal our borders and prosecute illegals just like every other country, including Mexico, does. We will no longer make one sided trade agreements but will look out for the interests of Americans. It isn't that Americans aren't working hard, we are the hardest workers in the world. Our leaders, however, have been taking from us the fruits of our labor and wasting them including by giving them to foreigners. Americans have had enough. Any leader who has the guts to lead an all out assault on those who are trying to sell us that we are "citizens of the world" and should be concerned more for the well being of Saudis or Iraqis or Mexicans or Chinese than U.S. citizens will have a huge groundswell of support.

Unfortunately, I see no leader like this on the horizon.

“Despite these negative attitudes towards Congress, Democrats continue to enjoy a double digit lead on the Generic Congressional Ballot”

I think it is a typo - it should be “enjoy a double digit
lead on the GERIATRIC Congressional Ballot”...there, fixed it! It’s a push poll from Miami-Dade County in FL!

I work in a market research company that has been conducting the election study for Annenberg Public Policy Center, and from personal experience I would guess that 25% of Americans still believe Republicans control the House of Representatives.

America voted for change in 2006, and we sure got it!

Tell me that wouldn't make a DAMN GOOD bumper sticker!

I would make it like THIS:

America voted for change in 2006, and we sure got it...
"THANK YOU DEMOCRAT CONGRESS!!"

Still seems like less than 9%. My guess, people didn’t hear the question correctly.

According to at least one poll, 18% of Americans believe that the sun revolves around the earth. If asked, I'm sure that some percentage would respond that the sun and the earth both revolve around Obama.

No matter what question you ask in a poll, you will never get 100% or 0%. It may be possible to have an approval rating of below 9%, but not by much.

I doubt 1 in 10 of those surveyed could actually name their Congressman and both Senators.

You overestimate the intelligence of the population. I doubt 50% could name their Congressman and both Senators.

At least 40% of the population will vote for anyone or anything running as a Democrat (hence the term "Yellow Dog Democrat").

It never ceases to amaze me to hear someone on the far left complain that Nancy Pelosi is not liberal enough.

I suppose that explains the 18% who believe the sun revolves around the earth.

The majority of voters (62%) say Congress has not passed any legislation to improve life in America.

How about some legislation to repeal what they have already passed?

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' 'interests,' I shall reply that I was informed that their main interest is in liberty, and in that cause I am doing the very best I can."

“With skyrocketing gas prices, it is clear that the American people can no longer afford the Republican Rubber Stamp Congress and its failure to stand up to Republican big oil and gas company cronies. Americans this week are paying $2.91 a gallon on average for regular gasoline – 33 cents higher than last month, and double the price than when President Bush first came to office.” ... - Nancy Pelosi, April 24, 2006

-——Great quote to remember for September and October campaign season !!!

that’s because all the hard leftists hate the Congress for not impeaching Bush or stopping FISA or whatever. Basically, Democrats hate their own congress for not being far enough to the left.
