Nursing has long been a ladder up for minority women, but a new state study shows that in New York City, black nurses get paid less than their white counterparts.
The Center for Health Workforce Studies at the State University of New York in Albany compared the salaries of nurses with similar experience and credentials and found that black nurses made less in almost all cases.
For example, black nurses with 30 or more years of experience earned an average annual salary of about $81,000, while white nurses with the same experience earned an average of almost $90,00011% more.
"That sounds like racism to me," says New York City Councilwoman Letitia James. "On the basic facts, if the report is correct, the situation is highly suspect."
Ms. James says she will ask the city to look into the findings.
Researchers who conducted the study, The Hospital Nursing Workforce in New York, didn't investigate the reasons for the pay gap but intend to do so in a second survey, according to a spokeswoman for the center One reason for the pay gap, she says, could be that most private hospitals, which pay more than the city's public hospitals, hire more white than black nurses. But the study found that even in the same hospital, white nurses are paid more.
Discrimination to blame
An official at one nurses union who did not want to be identified blames discrimination.
"White nurses are still in charge in many New York hospitals," she says. "They do the hiring, and they value their own."

Quite a difference between earning and simply gettting paid.
I call BS, right off.
The only variable that they examined was race/skin color.
Ignoring, or simply not examining, other factors and variables, and controlling for them,
just shows an agenda, not a valid study.
Perhaps there ar more white nurses at private hsopitals? Perhaps those places pay more than public institutions?
Who knows?
Why bother? There's no sense in wasting time "investigating the reasons" -- we already know that white racism is the cause of all bad things.
“hsopitals” s/b “hospitals”
I thought it was a story about breast feeding. LOL!
The government has set up protections against discrimination in pay due to race, gnder, etc. They should stop whining and file their cases, if they have one.
I'd like to see the stats on OT white vs black. That right there could be the answer or at least expose more discrimination.
Michelle is going to fix that.
Well this is yet more proof that the government must step in and control wages for nurses. heck they might as well control everyones wage. /puke
Funny thing about salary, if you want more money then you can work more hours or find a job that pays more. There is also the option of asking for a raise.
I’ve never seen or heard of a salary scale that differentiated by race or gender.
Everything else being equal, it is longevity that reveals the differences.
Did not see mentioned the education differences between white/black/Latino/Middle Eastern/Far Eastern nurses.
Are we talking apples and oranges here? RNs with Masters’ Degress vs. LPNs with Associates, or what?
As do I. I’m in hospitals plenty (more than I would like). Black nurses and other technical staff are extremely well represented.
How many of the nurses polled work in municipal hospitals? Might we be seeing the result of racism by a (D-controlled?) government?
I’m just askin...
This is really getting old.
Cry and whine, cry and whine. That way they will give you a licence to be a nurse even if you can’t pass the test.
"Credentials" presumably refers to education and related training. There is more that goes into a salary that education and experience. Like job performance ratings.
Until those are controlled for, this study says nothing to me.
not to mention attendence records. i’m sorry if you’ve been somewhere for 30 years, but have popped out a couple kids, taken maternity leave, and have to leave early every other week, you’re gonna get less money then someone who is there all the time.
and there’s sick time, tardiness, leaving early, constant switching shifts, etc.
not saying one group is more likely to do any of that, but take it into account.
