A number of friends of mine have commented on an odd phenomenon that they have observed conservative Republicans they know who are saying that they are going to vote for Barack Obama. It seemed at first to be an isolated fluke, perhaps signifying only that my friends know some strange conservatives. But apparently columnist Robert Novak has encountered the same phenomenon and has coined the term "Obamacons" to describe the conservatives for Senator Obama.
Now the San Francisco Chronicle has run a feature article, titled "Some Influential Conservatives Spurn GOP and Endorse Obama." In it they quote various conservatives on why they are ready to take a chance on Barack Obama, rather than on John McCain.
What is going on?
Partly what is going on is that, in recent years, the Congressional Republicans in general and Senator John McCain in particular have so alienated so many conservatives that some of these conservatives are like a drowning man grasping at a straw.

Unfortunately, men of this caliber rarely run. I think they find the whole process too degrading.
Excellent post. I am not a conservative - obviously - but I admire people who think clearly.
With attitudes like this, the GOP could have put Snowe on the ticket and people like you would abandon principle to vote for her.
This is the malaise killing us. Selling out principle for short term political gain.
Bump for tonight.
I will not vote for Obama. And, I will not vote for McCain. McCain is part of the problem with the GOP and will continue to lead the GOP into the wilderness. In the short run, America will be better off with McCain, but the GOP will be worse. In the long run, and after McCain has eviscerated conservatives within the GOP, it will likely make little difference.
This is completely true...it's also true that there are much larger issues at stake here and it's time for conservatives of all stripes to check their emotions (myself completely included!) and realize what's at stake in this election.
Thanks for the ping.
Read my posts since the GOP primary essentially ended. I have consistently said what you are saying. A post I wrote about why we must vote against Obama even ended up on Ann Coulter's website.
I am just making the point that Sowell is correct; there are a surprising number of people who are leaving the GOP reservation. Those are the folks to whom we need to explain the facts of life. This goes for the Bob Barr supporters as well.
A vote against McCain is a vote against the war in Iraq. The only thing on which McCain and I agree is the importance of defeating terrorism and supporting our troops. To me this trumps any other issue.
I will only agree with you that on more things, perhaps, Scarface may well be marginally better than Osama. But in my book, pardon my French, they both suck. And, of course, I know I am not limited to two choices in November. So, to each his own I suppose. Thanks for your input.
As far as I can tell, this is the only reason to vote for McCain. Judges. Period.
Thanks, Lou. That says it very succinctly. All Freepers who want to "teach the GOP a lesson" are risking the future of us all. I suspect them of ulterior, and not so respectable, motives.
Our challenge is to overcome massive Democrat voter fraud. An article on ACORN recently in Human Events showed how they operate in registering phony voters and dumping all the new names on the registrars at the last minute when it is too late to verify them. They do this all over but especially in the swing precincts of the swing cities and states. That is how Al Gore and John Kerry came so close to winning, pure fraud.
Those who want the luxury of "standing on principle" in this election by not voting or by casting a protest vote may never get another chance. Once judges become mini dictators, kiss America goodbye.
“I’m gonna quote it on some bumper stickers.”

You’re preaching to the choir. The bulk of those who tip the scales for socialism wouldn’t know what the word means and they certainly wouldn’t know what inherent virtue means and they probably have no idea who this W. Churchill guy is, they probaly think he is a baseball player.
You cannot be a “conservative” and vote for the Obomnation.
He speaks the truth, consistently.
He is the kind of man we desperately need for a President.
I have too and when a name pops up like J.C.Watts - he was NEVER a “conservative”. RACE is more important to him. He was the Republican's token black - same with Powell. So again, genuine conservatives won't be voting for the Obomination unless they are closet racists with a Republican label (RHINO).
Thomas Sowell!!
Now theres not just a black man that I could vote for, but a MAN that I would vote for.
SAME HERE!
BTW, I’m “white”.
Thank you for informing me of that tragedy. That is so sad. Walter loves her very much. I will be sending belated condolences.
Now that the two parties have finally selected their presidential candidates, it is time for a sober-- if not grim-- assessment of where we are.Not since 1972 have we been presented with two such painfully inadequate candidates. When election day came that year, I could not bring myself to vote for either George McGovern or Richard Nixon. I stayed home.
This year, none of us has that luxury. While all sorts of gushing is going on in the media, and posturing is going on in politics, the biggest national sponsor of terrorism in the world-- Iran-- is moving step by step toward building a nuclear bomb.
The point when they get that bomb will be the point of no return. Iran's nuclear bomb will be the terrorists' nuclear bomb-- and they can make 9/11 look like child's play.
. . . we do not have the luxury of waiting for our ideal candidate or of indulging our emotions by voting for some third party candidate to show our displeasure-- at the cost of putting someone in the White House who is not up to the job.
Senator John McCain has been criticized in this column many times. But, when all is said and done . . . The choice between him and Barack Obama should be a no-brainer.
