Obama Faces Resistance From Top Supporters of Clinton
Wall Street Journal ^ | 7 July 2008 | JOHN R. EMSHWILLER and CHRISTOPHER COOPER

Sen. Barack Obama, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee, faces dissent from dozens of top fund-raisers and other supporters of former rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, who are angry over how she was treated during their bruising primary battle and are hesitating to back Sen. Obama.

...Meanwhile, an analysis of campaign-finance records conducted for The Wall Street Journal by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics shows that in May, when Sen. Obama was widely believed to have clinched the Democratic nomination, only one Hillraiser had switched allegiance to the Obama campaign. And while 115 individuals who had donated at least $1,000 to Sen. Clinton made their first donations to Sen. Obama, another 115 former Clinton backers made their first big donations to Sen. McCain.

The McCain campaign is pressing its case with former Clinton donors. Roughly two dozen big Clinton backers are looking to meet soon with Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard Co. chief executive who is avidly supporting Sen. McCain. The idea, said one person familiar with the campaign's plans, is to pluck disaffected independents, and especially women, from the ranks of former Clinton supporters. A similar meeting occurred last month in Ohio between Ms. Fiorina and Clinton supporters, the McCain campaign said.

...Even so, it is threatening his support among liberal Democrats, many of whom make up his small-donor base. The independent activist group Democrats.com has established an escrow fund to encourage Sen. Obama to rethink his position on warrantless-wiretapping legislation, which is supported by the Bush administration but opposed by liberal Democrats.. Through its new Obama Progressive Escrow Fund, the group is asking donors to contribute $1 million in conditional pledges that would be doled out to the candidate as long as his stances jibed with the group's politics.

Interesting concept -- if you vote a certain way, we will give you $1M. I sort of thought buying votes was illegal in this country, but I suppose if you do it in a flashy way, then it's just politics.

I have received many, many emails from former Clinton supporters from my web site, thanking me for the info on Obama, indicating that they intend to vote McCain. Now, I do not seek, and am not in support of the vast majority of their positions...but I am glad they are voting for McCain rather than Obama and believe, despite McCain's faults on conservative issues, that defeating Obama is in the absolute best interests of our nation.

She was treated just fine. Too bad the clintins can’t handle loss. They have been bruised...whaaa, whaaa and are STILL hanging on. I guess it makes him and her feel important having their supporters continue to make waves. I have news for them...Obama doesn’t NEED their support nor the clintins. I think he is just pandering to them is all. They are OVER.
