Obama 'Puzzled' by Frenzy Over Iraq War Plan Comments
ABC News Political Radar Blog ^ | July 05, 2008 4:36 PM | Sunlen Miller

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama told reporters he was “puzzled” by the press coverage he received on Thursday when he held two separate press conferences to explain his plan to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.

On Thursday in Fargo, N.D,, Obama told reporters in a morning press conference that he will “continue to refine” his plan to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq in 16 months.

Reporters immediately jumped on the comments that showed that Obama’s expressed openness to adjust his long-held 16-month withdrawal plans was at odds with the stance that he took during the primary campaign.

At his second hastily called press availability Thursday, Sen. Obama insinuated that the McCain campaign had primed the press and were to blame for the interpretation of his position.

En route to a speech in St Louis today, the Senator told reporters on his plane that the news cycle his comments caused was perplexing.

“I was a little puzzled by the frenzy that I set off by what I thought was a pretty innocuous statement, which is that I am absolutely committed to ending the war,” he said.

Obama reiterated his commitment to his withdraw plan again. “I will call my joint chiefs of staff and give them an assignment and that is to end the war,” he said. “I think what’s important is to understand the difference between strategy and tactics. I have always believed that our invasion of Iraq was a strategic blunder.”

He continued, “The tactics of how we ensure our troops are safe as we pull out, how we execute the withdrawal. Those are things that are all based on facts and conditions, and you know I'm not somebody who, unlike George Bush, is willing to ignore facts on the basis of my preconceived notions. I want to pay attention to what’s happening on the ground.”

So now he’s just “misunderstood”. OK. Maybe it’s time for him to “reintroduce” himself again.

Obama uses the BC technique - blatently lie, and let the MSM cover for you.

In a debate, Obama was asked if input from the Generals on the ground might change his mind. He replied ‘No, as Commander-in-Chief, my opinion overrides theirs - and in my opinion, we need to leave Iraq immediately’ - not an exact quote, but close.

Now he says he ALWAYS said he would adjust for the facts on the ground. Like BC, he lies - and like they did for BC, the MSM turns away.

He is laying the ground work for another change after he visit Iraq, but as long as he says that he is consistent who are we to challenge it.

I hope he makes it past Denver. By the time he’s firmly ensconced as the Democrat candidate, all of his lies, waffles, and sordid history should reach critical mass.

I wonder if he even knows what the difference is between the two. Throw in Theater and Operational level stuff at him and his big-eared head would probably explode.

Why in the Hell isn't McCain and the GOP going after Obama? If Lee Atwater was still around, Obama would be toast already.

I fricking hate the GOP over crap like this. McCain is going to screw around and lose the election. WAKE UP MCCAIN! Obama makes McGovern look like Reagan!

The facts Senator Obama are pretty simple. In the last year we have kicked the bad guys butts from one end of Iraq to the other. We have done this because of General Petraus's brilliant tactics that now have the people that were shooting at us at our side killing bad guys.

The only way we can lose if you are elected President and pull the troops out unconditionally. You know this, you are not stupid. The only logical answer to what you would do is that you WANT US TO LOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my. Insinuating that his minions in the press upset his widdle equilibrium?

...what I thought was a pretty innocuous statement...

Hmm, does he even know the meaning of innocuous? At any rate, there is nothing innocuous involved in any discussion regarding our troops and decisions regarding the solutions to the WOT

Amazing, isn’t it? What a clown. I can’t believe some people believe that not only does he have a shot of winning but that he’ll dominate. This retard couldn’t win a race for dog catcher.

Clinton blamed the Congress for his illegal campaign contributions. He was too tempted by the existing loopholes.

Wait until you hear an historic butt kicking that was just accomplished in Afghanistan - can't say anything yet as it hasn't broken - but oh boy- what a story. You'll recognize it when you hear it...

Let me just say this: the peelosi/reedy/obamination gang will be saddened

What IS the difference between strategy tactics?

For instance, a ‘strategic’ maneuver and a ‘tactical’ maneuver?

The two words seem to have a great deal of overlap in their dictionary definitions.

Thanks!
