WOW.

What a towering figure in Washington for so long.

May God be with all those who feel his loss most keenly.

May God raise up others to take the torch onward and upward.

Thanks for this alert.

I can’t think of a congressman that did more for the benefit of ALL Americans than Senator Helms. God Rest His Soul.

On the Fourth of July, as did John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

It is fitting. For true defenders of the Constitution, the Fourth of July IS a good day to die...

Sad to hear. He was a good Senator that served his state and the nation well.

Typical driveby media anti-conservative drivel on the link...

"outspoken conservative views polarized NC...". Pfft!

All that aside, condolenscenses to his family and may God rest his soul

http://blog.heritage.org/2008/07/04/jesse-helms-1921-2008/

Conservative Sen. Jesse Helms, 86, a truly great American and champion of freedom, died at 1:18 a.m. today. Helms, who gave our country three decades of service as a U.S. senator from North Carolina, was ill in recent years.

Heritage President Ed Feulner (pictured at right with Helms and his wife Dorothy) presented Helms in 2002 with the Clare Boothe Luce Award, Heritage’s highest honor, calling him a “dedicated, unflinching and articulate advocate of conservative policy and principle.”

In response to today’s sad news, Feulner offered this statement:

“Jesse Helms was one of the most consequential figures of the 20th century. Along with Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan, he helped establish the conservative movement and became a powerful voice for free markets and free people. The defeat of Soviet communism and the rise of Ronald Reagan would not have happened without his intrepid leadership at decisive times.

He was the longest serving U.S. senator from North Carolina and a great friend to The Heritage Foundation. Although America has lost a great Patriot, his legacy will live on.”

Died on the Fourth of July.

Just like Adams and Jefferson.

Fitting.

RIP Jesse... a true patriot and conservative. May the socialists and the DBM choke to death on the venom they will spew upon the news of your death!

Sorry to hear this. Rest in peace Senator Helms. Prayers for him and his family.

I've been listening to Fox News in the background for the past hour, and haven't heard this once. Yet we were repeatedly blasted with the news of Kennedy's illness. No media bias there.

For years I said that congress people should have to take a course on how to be a congress person, taught by Jesse, and pass, before being allowed to take a seat in either house. This country would be in MUCH better shape.
