Follow The Money: McCain to Pick Mitt Romney As Running Mate
Co-ed Magazine ^ | July 1, 2008 | Andrew

Posted on 07/01/2008 4:56:30 PM PDT by Plutarch

Sen. John McCain will choose businessman and former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney as Vice President, in his bid for the White House this November, a source closely connected with the McCain campaign, who asked to remain anonymous, told us earlier this afternoon.

Though others were close in the running, the choice ultimately came down to the money–not the man. According to our source, the campaign narrowed their Vice Presidential options to Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, the two most successful opponents of McCain in the bid for the Republican nomination. But despite Huckabee’s sway with far Right conservatives and evangelical voters, Romney packs the deepest fund-raising pockets.

As a successful businessman and prominent member of the staggeringly wealthy Mormon community, Romney brings with him the potential to raise “upwards of $60 million in 30 to 60 days, whereas Huckabee could only raise $10 to $15 million,” says our source.

McCain needs those types of numbers to be competitive with the money-sponge that is the Obama campaign, which has 1.7 million individual donors–as well as the Hollywood machine–and is ringing-out advertising dollars across the country, saturating voters in his ‘50 State Strategy‘ to win the White House.

“How the hell did the publisher of the ‘Top 20 Side-Boobs of All Time‘ get this scoop,” you must be asking yourself, right now. (We were asking ourselves the same question.) And here’s the answer: It’s all part of the McCain campaign’s plan to directly target college-age voters, in an attempt to sway them away from Sen. Obama, says our source.

Additionally, the campaign wants to solidify their ticket far in advance of the Obama campaign making their VP choice, in order to get a “head start” on the surge in fund-raising they expect to receive with the announcement of Romney as the Republican VP pick.

So next time two dudes in suits knock on your door, they might want more than to proselytize about the Book of Mormon…

UPDATE: We understand better than anyone how crazy it seems that we got this story first, so a healthy level of skepticism is expected. But we stand by the accuracy of our reporting on this, and will give you as many new details as possible in the coming days–including the name of our source, if we can.

Hey! Have a great time in Zion’s. It will be hot hot hot though. :) I’m planning a trip to either Zion’s or Bryce Canyon in the fall.

Quickly went through my ping list and of course there is nothing there but your sophomoric comments with no substance. Your professed “writings” on MA make me laugh out loud. How lucky FR is to have a Massachusetts historian such as yourself.

Ah, you do love the attention though don’t you?

I have addressed some of the “facts” by the way, in this thread no less. I notice you don’t touch those posts though.

All you got is a pocket full of chump change.

Lovebuggers, you haven’t addressed squat. Why don’t you try answering the question that’s been put to you and your *omney comrades in anus on this thread and others for months on end ? It’s in post #364.

"How lucky FR is to have a Massachusetts historian such as yourself."

They are indeed. Not only MA but many other states as well. That's why I'm consulted on a daily basis. How many times are you ? I never see you anywhere on FR, except to heap insults on your betters in threads like this.

GOP federal office — in MA? Are you kidding me right now? How about you telling us which RINO (as you refer to all of them correct?)had a legitimate shot at it, mmmkay?

Healy never had a prayer, and it really makes no difference if Romney actually campaigned with her or not. She was also the former chair of the MA GOP, with an extremely wealthy husband who understood the reason why she was picked for Ltgov in the first place. She, by the way, was the one who lobbied Romney to run in MA.

The day Tim Murray secured the Ltgov party nomination was the day Deval Patrick won the seat. It really is that simple.

“”In the past, Republican governors had tried to pick off a few legislative seats to build their numbers, but Romney personally began an aggressive recruiting drive and in May, unveiled a slate of 131 Republicans, the most in a decade, for the Legislature’s 200 seats.

With Romney’s help, the state party raised $3 million and sent a blizzard of direct mail attacking Democrats for supporting state college tuition discounts for illegal immigrants and being soft on sex offender laws.

For his part, Romney campaigned for more than 40 candidates with almost 70 trips around the state.””

[whine]But...but... he abandoned the GOP....even Weld wouldn’t have done that..[/whine]

Yeah, Weld left us with the hapless Celluci and equally pathetic Swift. Score — what a guy.

How about you go find an easier state for you to school others on, like Arkansas for instance. Start small and work your way up to the big leagues.

You know nothing about my state. Run along now junior.

women, landless and those under 18 are your defined three groups...... those under 18 can’t vote, so I guess that you are pretty much mistaken on your premise that Clinton, Obama and “Myth Romney” (<— oooh, good one) depend on their votes.

I am trying to be offended, but really can’t muster it as your ignorance is so incredibly astounding.

You do enjoy quite the fan club though, as does the exceptionally self-important celebrity fieldjockey there. I am sure heads of state consult you for your opinion on all things important also.

One saving grace will be that I don't think his wife will let him waste 10s of millions on another fruitless run.

Also I think things will finallythave sunk low enough in the country (think end of Carter's term) that even the most wishy washy “Conservatives” plus the old Regan Democrats will finally be ready to put away vanity candidates for one who actually is conservative.

I’m still waiting on an apology (along with the other fine FR ladies) from Rome2000 on Rome2000 saying that we women shouldn’t have the right to vote.

Oh ok, I see now. It’s ______ fault that Thompson blew it badly by waiting so long to enter the race. Coulter (who is a conservative by the way, you can paint her anything you would like, but she is so deal with it), doesn’t like your guy so she is a RINO now who would have voted for Clinton.

Riiight. Hear that sound? It’s your credibility zooming out the window.

I actually liked Thompson a great deal and was extremely disappointed he played the race the way he did (gosh, I hope you weren’t consulting his campaign...). Coulter I take in small doses, but she called Romney back in 2006 (when the pickins weren’t slim). Of course anyone who picked Romney is a RINO, you being the authority on them and all.

LOL...

Oh man, what a gift to start the day!

So let me get this straight, your defense on the Second Amendment stalwart Mitt Romney, NRA member since August 2006, oddly the same time he decided to run for President, (no that is not expediency) is that he signed a bill that was sufficient in scope to pass the LIBERAL DEMOCRATICE LEGISLATURE of Massachusetts. Yeah, there is something to be proud of. I will grant you the NRA was pleased since they went from the worst gun laws in the land to just slightly bad ones, we gun nut job NRA folks will praise any move forward, no matter how pathetic it really is.

Of course this over looks the whole "I'd sign the assault weapons ban if it hit my desk" and the fact that just two years prior (before he decided to run for President) he said he did not want to mess with the state gun laws (oooh the timing...)

I tell you what, since you have stated you wont take my word for anything, lets try facts from external sources, read these and get back to me on the subject of "Mitt Romney Second Amendment Conservative Stalwart"....

BTW, carry a hankie, your fact allergies may act up:

http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Mitt_Romney_Gun_Control.htm

http://thecitizensjournalblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/mitt-romney-i-support-assault-weapons.html

http://www.gunowners.org/pres08/romney.htm

As for the Romneycare thing, not been a Conservative long have you? When something wins the praise of John Kerry, Hilary Clinton and James Carville, it is BAD for Conservatives...

Damn, just damn...

Oh well, don't worry, you'll have a chance to redeem yourself down the road, with things going down the tubes, either quick with Obama or slow and slightly delayed with McCain, ultimately even Mitt folks will be clamoring for a real Conservative, one with a life long record, not just 2-4 years of conservative stances. The time for vanity candidates will be long gone...

I don’t think so either. Especially, since he’s a one-issue voter.

I have no problem with it, but I have to ask, since you voted for Reagan, what did you base your support for Romney on. Was it his 2-4 year record of Conservative stances?

Reagan was a life long conservative, it was in his core, no matter the party he belonged to. Sadly not so for Mitt, the facts and his record over his political lifetime does not lie.

I don't fault you, many good conservatives of both genders (we only have two in the Conservative world) got caught up in his pizazz, (or supported him for other reasons I shall stay away from), and things are still good enough to afford the luxury of vanity candidates. I understand the desire to win makes bad choices look good in this environment. I fear that is coming to an end, and it will be a harsh time for many, and uncomfortable for all, but there will be sunlight at the end of the tunnel, just like in 1980...

Damn just damn..... dangle an excerpt and you are lapping it up like a puppy dog.

I understand the insurance program here, and could give a flying fig who supports it.

The short of it is we were paying $1 billion plus a year in free care at hospitals with no way to cap the yearly increases to that. The plan Romney worked out caps the spending, and is a fantastic plan. If all you can offer is that Kennedy et al like the plan, then let’s just pass on this topic as I have no interest in debating nonsense sensationalism with you.

As for the NRA — if you knew anything at all about MA you would know that what Romney was able to get passed is something to be proud of. He has stated he does not see eye to eye with the NRA on every issue, and pretty much has stated what he will and will not support as president.

OMG he joined the NRA when he decided to run for president — I had no idea he was a politician, thanks so much for pointing that out for me. My face must be so red from embarrassment from not knowing that there are non politicians running for the office for presidency. Please point them out for me so I can be properly schooled on this issue.

Give me a freakin break.

Yawn.

Of course Bill Weld who was always an NRA member, an avid hunter who owns many weapons lobbied for the strictest gun control laws in the country when he was governor of MA.

Prior to his flip flop y’all would have been drooling over him.
