Follow The Money: McCain to Pick Mitt Romney As Running Mate
Co-ed Magazine ^ | July 1, 2008 | Andrew

Posted on 07/01/2008 4:56:30 PM PDT by Plutarch

Sen. John McCain will choose businessman and former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney as Vice President, in his bid for the White House this November, a source closely connected with the McCain campaign, who asked to remain anonymous, told us earlier this afternoon.

Though others were close in the running, the choice ultimately came down to the money–not the man. According to our source, the campaign narrowed their Vice Presidential options to Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, the two most successful opponents of McCain in the bid for the Republican nomination. But despite Huckabee’s sway with far Right conservatives and evangelical voters, Romney packs the deepest fund-raising pockets.

As a successful businessman and prominent member of the staggeringly wealthy Mormon community, Romney brings with him the potential to raise “upwards of $60 million in 30 to 60 days, whereas Huckabee could only raise $10 to $15 million,” says our source.

McCain needs those types of numbers to be competitive with the money-sponge that is the Obama campaign, which has 1.7 million individual donors–as well as the Hollywood machine–and is ringing-out advertising dollars across the country, saturating voters in his ‘50 State Strategy‘ to win the White House.

“How the hell did the publisher of the ‘Top 20 Side-Boobs of All Time‘ get this scoop,” you must be asking yourself, right now. (We were asking ourselves the same question.) And here’s the answer: It’s all part of the McCain campaign’s plan to directly target college-age voters, in an attempt to sway them away from Sen. Obama, says our source.

Additionally, the campaign wants to solidify their ticket far in advance of the Obama campaign making their VP choice, in order to get a “head start” on the surge in fund-raising they expect to receive with the announcement of Romney as the Republican VP pick.

So next time two dudes in suits knock on your door, they might want more than to proselytize about the Book of Mormon…

UPDATE: We understand better than anyone how crazy it seems that we got this story first, so a healthy level of skepticism is expected. But we stand by the accuracy of our reporting on this, and will give you as many new details as possible in the coming days–including the name of our source, if we can.

It happens, the GOP loses. It’s. Just. That. Simple.

I agree. Nothing like adding a fake conservative to the ticket to cheese off the base even more.

Don’t start this garbage again!

Hey, you want to leave the garbage behind, stop pumping for Mr. RomneyCare. A sizable number of Conservatives find the guy anathema. That should be enough to make you understand that he's a bad, bad VP pick.

IF Obama wins, Mr Robinson, myself, and you will likely not have the freedoms to post on a forum like this at long. You will then fully understand what Stalinism is at its worst, and Romney will appear to be Reaganesque in comparison.

Well put. Thank you.

Romney is articulate and at least reached out to conservatives during the primaries. Like I said, I respect him for that instead of someone like McCain who gave conservatives the middle finger. I don't like Romney and was among those who criticized him here extensively, but it is what it is, unfortunately. Such a ticket would give conservatives a lifeline and Romney would be a fool to go back to being a liberal once he's the VP.

I wouldn't be enthusiastic about the ticket and I wouldn't volunteer or donate, I'd just quietly vote down-ticket GOP and it really depends on what both McCain and Romney say over the following months leading up to the election that will weigh my decision to vote for them.

Nope... Wrong guy... However, if he was on the ticket against H, I would support him, no doubt.

If you are going to “talk” about someone, you should also ping them to your post—that is FR etiquette.

As shown by subsequent posts, your judgments about fieldmarshaldj are not accurate.

His profile page is not my cup of tea, but I have seen far worse on regular TV and on public beaches. That said, he does exhibit a high degree of good taste.

It would be better to limit the discourse to the issues than to delve into personal attacks.

Thanks. Having been much younger myself once, I don’t want someone who can get carded in a bar making the tough decisions.

Dennis Prager correctly points out that the “Don’t trust anyone under 30” movement in the 60s cut out the foundation of our society and the great thinkers (and books)that built our country.

Big mistake.

I think you meant to say “ Don’t trust anyone OVER thirty”.

That’s the way I remember it ;)

Ted Kennedy is a democrat that for whatever reason doesn’t like the power of the Clintons. Yes, he is an Obama democrat but he isn’t Obama. And, if it were a Ted Kennedy presidency, I just think he would be slower in destroying this nation than Obama. Kennedy has been in politics much longer and has a lot of cronies to influence his vote. Obama doesn’t have that and therefore would have less hurt people under his feet. Both would destroy the nation. Its a question of speed.

He's dishonest and slimy.

That he is, in some aspects. However, one would have to have the sleaziness of Bill Clinton to start off as a liberal, morph into a moderate-conservative, and become a liberal again after safely being chosen for VP.

My summary is that Romney has learned from his past gaffes and liberalism, and has reinvented himself into a classic Republican, promoting good-old fashioned fiscal conservatism and free-market policies. Will his addition to McCain on the ticket attract conservatives? Probably not the social conservatives wooed by Huckster, but he'll blunt the impact of Barr and the libertarians and bring them back into the GOP. Romney would be a fool to become a liberal again, risking the wrath of conservatives who once again held their noses for the GOP ticket. In conclusion, I would rather roll the dice and vote for McCain/Romney and keep the pressure on them & the GOP instead of risking an Obama presidency that'll be more devastating than Carter's.

"Thus far, I have seen over the top irrational dribble coming from your posts."

Well, given your own pig-ignorant blindess and ra-ra liberal propaganda for the RINO version of the false Messiah...

"Don’t preach to me about intellectual integrity and knock it off with the personal attacks. They are unbecoming."

Find a mirror and repeat that to yourself, babe.

"I’ve thought long and hard about this election and the candidates on the block. If we had a Reagan, I would be thrilled. We don’t. If Newt were running, I’d be happy. He isn’t."

Newt would lose. He got the GOP to the promised land, but he went back and wandered about in the desert again.

"If any strong conservative had an ounce of a chance, I would be out there campaigning for him or her, but they aren’t out there."

We had Fred. Where were you ?

"I used my vote for Huckabee in the primaries."

The Southern *omney. Well, that's reassuring.

"I don’t want McCain, but he’s the belle that has been brought to the ball."

I didn't bring him, and if he insists on slitting out party's throat by having a liberal fraud as his running mate, he can take himself home (or to the boneyard).

"I’ve studied Romney."

Au contraire. If you knew him and his record and claimed to be Conservative, you couldn't. Of course, you just said you were supporting Huckster...

"I like him better than McCain because I think McCain can be a rather nasty individual to conservatives."

We already know that. But why would you remedy that by supporting someone who has a record of euthanizing the GOP ? At least there is still a Republican party in Arizona.

"Do I think Mitt is perfect. No."

I've heard this same line trying to concede the man's faults. Problem is, that's like a man who has been rolled into the hospital after being run over by a car and saying, "He's just got a hangnail."

"I do think he has good business sense from when I have heard him speak concerning business."

And yet his record as Governor demonstrates he did NOTHING to prove any business credentials. The state continues to decline.

"Is he pro-life? Says he is."

He'll SAY whatever he thinks a crowd wants to hear. I was there for his first campaign for Senator. He's a slick talker. Why do you think I call him "Joe Isuzu" ? To the weak-minded, this guy could sell Eskimo suits (with moth-holes) to folks living in the Sahara.

"People change their minds, you know."

Yeah, and right just in time to run for President. Don't you guys know when you're being lied to ? You CANNOT be that stupid and naive.

"He’s not as pro-life as I would like him to be, but neither is McCain. Is he pro-military? Yes."

This from a man whose family hasn't had a single member to serve in the military for generations. I don't trust him on that, either.

"And, he’s better on immigration than McCain."

He'd sign off on shamnesty faster than McCain would. You'd be a fool to trust him on anything.

"They are both pro-Israel and anti-islamofascism and are far more likely to nominate a Scalia than an Obama candidacy."

This is why I know you haven't researched *omney at all. If you did, you'd know his record of appointing a liberal, pro-criminal judiciary. And don't tell me he "changed his mind." Enough is enough. This guy sets off more alarm bells than a jihadist going through an airport security screen.

"IF Obama wins, Mr Robinson, myself, and you will likely not have the freedoms to post on a forum like this at long. You will then fully understand what Stalinism is at its worst, and Romney will appear to be Reaganesque in comparison."

Of course, McCain could smarten up and pick Mark Sanford, a proven effective leader and giant who attracts Conservatives like flies to honey (oh, and for the FReeper women and metrosexuals who value looks above record, he would be attractive to them) and we wouldn't have to worry so much about November.

Here’s a thread I started almost a year and a half ago, assessing the candidates... I was an FDT fan, until he was pretty much out if it, then I supported Romney against the rest (McCain, Huck, Paul)... as did over 70% of Freepers http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1804334/posts

He’s articulate ? So what ? So are used-car salesmen. Bubba Clinton sure was. I want a doer, not a talker. Pretending the man isn’t what he is (a liberal con-man) is rank naivete. You’re smarter than that, Triple-E. I’m surprised at you.

As shown by subsequent posts, your judgments about fieldmarshaldj are not accurate.

What is not accurate? He has sexually provocative photographs of underage females posted on his profile. This contradicts his claims to be ultra- conservative.

He claims Mitt Romney is not conservative enough to be the VP nominee. I think it is Fieldmarshaldj who lacks conservative credentials.
