"Black National Anthem" causes stir at Hick speech
The Denver Post ^ | 07/01/2008 | Christopher N. Osher

As Denver dignitaries gathered today for Mayor John Hickenlooper's State of the City address, City Council President Michael Hancock introduced singer Rene Marie to perform the national anthem.

But that's not what she did.

Instead, Marie performed the song "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," which is also known as the "Black National Anthem."

When she finished, the proceedings moved forward, and few seemed to notice that the Star Spangled Banner was never performed.

One who did notice was Councilman Charlie Brown, and he took to local talk radio Tuesday afternoon to blast the lack of the nation's anthem at the proceedings.

"There's no replacement for the national anthem," Brown said. "They should have sung it."

Brown said Hancock has told talk radio stations he only introduced the singer from prepared remarks handed to him and was unaware that she would not be performing the Star Spangled Banner. Hancock did not immediately return a call seeking comment, nor did Hickenlooper or his staff.

She said that she told her husband and another person before the event that she was going to switch songs.

She lied to Hick that she would sing the national ...before the event, then apologized to Hick personally right after her event, then went on radio later that evening to defend her antics : thus revoked the personal apology she made to the mayor just hours earlier...

They may be patriotic, but is isn’t to the United States of America. It is to some seditious construct.

See #81.

No over reaction going on.

The National Anthem is sung before council meetings after the Pledge of Allegiance.

The —— lied. If you defend her actions, maybe you are in the wrong forum!

I think there is a lot of overreaction going on.

You think?

This was Hickenlooper's moment, not hers. This was extremely presumptuous of her.

Then, after "apologizing" to the Mayor, she turned around and went on radio to defend what she did! She as much as spit in the Mayor's face!

Thus, you can accurately say that her bad manners are exceeded only by her bad manners.

This is absolutely no class, but a lot of these lib characters have zero idea of what constitutes class, so we shouldn't be surprised.

Any takers on just what will pass for the "Democratic National Convention" in that fair city? Or better yet, maybe they should move the venue to Boulder.

Ugh!

CA....

“True to our native land.”

I dont think you read the last line, ‘true to our native land’ as in their allegance is to Africa.

All of the whites in the audience sit their on their hands unwilling to speak out because of the leftists will immediately spew their racist hate against them. Diversity programs and ideology has created a country that is more divided than ever. Everyone (except white males) are some hyphenated proud minority, claiming victim status and wanting extra freebies from the govt. nipple and pardons for horrendous crimes. Damn shame we dont have a single conservative politician willing to call a spade a spade.

“True to our native land.”

Which native land do you think they are referring to in the song? You are naive if you cant figure it out by reading the entire lyrics that ‘native’ refers to Africa.

Chanteuse René Marie had been invited by Mayor John Hickenlooper’s office to sing the national anthem during his annual State of the City address.

Council President Michael Hancock, the master of ceremonies, introduced Marie, who sang what is known as the “Black National Anthem” instead.

Her performance evoked angry reactions among some of the estimated 700 people at the event.

“There is no substitute for the national anthem. Period,” Councilman Charlie Brown said.

“This is the State of the City address. It’s not an NAACP convention,”

Hickenlooper and his staff said they expected Marie to sing the “The Star-Spangled Banner” and that they were surprised when she sang something different.

Hickenlooper said in an interview that he spoke to Marie after the ceremony and that she apologized profusely.

Marie said she had no regrets. She deliberately didn’t tell anybody about her song choice “because I don’t think it is necessary for an artist to ask permission to express themselves artistically,” she said.

“I would not change a thing,”

Overreaction?

Marie said she had no regrets. She deliberately didn’t tell anybody about her song choice “because I don’t think it is necessary for an artist to ask permission to express themselves artistically,” she said.

So when Pavarotti is scheduled to sing Rigoletto, but then on stage, breaks into Pagliacci, the patrons in the audience have no business complaining, "Shut up and enjoy it" ??

This is a foolish argument for this woman to be using, it is ridiculous to claim *artistic freedom* because she wanted to make a racist/political point.

And you are definitely overreacting.

Well, being as how it was written by people who were clearly not separatist and was first performed in 1900 for Lincoln's Birthday, I think it's pretty safe to say it's about this one. You don't even have to "cant" to figure it out.

Glad to see that they do have the required dipshit doing the signing, though.

I believe we are probably the only nation that sings about a war in their national anthem.

You don't get out much, do you?

Would you like me to post a translation of "La Marsailles?"

The city is blue, but the burbs are quite red

I totally understand, being from California - Luckily North San Diego County is pretty red also.

Art is supposed to make you think. I wanted to express how I felt, being a black woman living in this country," Marie told 7NEWS.

"Cause the state of the city event is all about her, I guess. This just adds to my observation that most artists are narcissists.
