Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who previously said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to each state, has announced his opposition to a California ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriages.
In a letter to Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club read Sunday at the group's annual Pride Breakfast in San Francisco, the Illinois senator said he supports extending "fully equal rights and benefits to same-sex couples under both state and federal law."
"And that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states," Obama wrote.
Obama had previously said he personally opposes same-sex marriage, but each state should make its own decision.
A spokesman for Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who last week endorsed Proposition 8 on the Nov. 4 California ballot, accused Obama of continuing a pattern of changing his position on issues.

I oppose him being in the country. He should take Michael Moore, Alec Baldwin and Babs and move to Zimbabwe.
That’s not the waffle I know.
ClearCase_guy: Apparently, the issue of gay marriage should be left up to each state, so long as each state is prepared to approve of the issue of gay marriage.
pissant: You noticed that too, huh? What a charlatan.
Obama: I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common-sense, effective safety measures."
Would seem someone ought to be able to tag Obama's logical equivalencies and rhetorical reductions as an exploitable wound. They're so obvious that a little repetition ought to fix both his faces permanently in the minds of those trying to decide for whom to vote. Maybe a caricature of Obama with one face and two mouths?
i second that.
McCain can kiss my grits as well on this issue. He voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment, which would have protected the states from what is happening in California right now. He helped to assure the success of the California Supreme Court black robes by doing nothing to stop them in advance.
I'm far from being a McCain fan, too, because of his anti-American voting record (CFR, amnesty, et al). But you'll be kissing Obama's ring if enough of you think this way.
“Gay” “marriage” is a Trojan Horse for sex predators. Save the children!
I would ask Obama if he believed that marriage was between one man and one woman only.
Not to be pedantic but since California has had legal homosexual marriages for about two weeks now, Prop 8 would exactly be a BAN on homosexual marriage.
