Former Kerry advisor: McCain’s POW captivity left him “sadly limited” in foreign policy experience

I’m not sure what to do with this. Obviously what he said raised someone’s eyebrow at ABC, but they don’t give us enough of a quote to know exactly what he’s saying.

While Barack Obama was urging supporters not to devalue the military service of rival John McCain on Monday, a top Democratic voice on foreign policy argued at the political arm of a liberal think tank that the former POW’s isolation during the Vietnam war has hobbled the Arizona senator’s capacity as a war-time leader.

The comments were made by Rand Beers, Sen. John Kerry’s, D-Mass., top national security adviser during his 2004 presidential run…

His voice rising, [a] questioner wanted to know if McCain understood that the public would not go along with a protracted US troop commitment to military conflicts that were not premised strictly on self-defense but rather on the expansion of freedom or democracy.

Beers said that because McCain was in an unfortunate state of “isolation” during much of the Vietnam War, his national security experience is “sadly limited.” McCain spent five years in captivity as a POW in North Vietnam.

The Democrats and Obama's mistake is that they think the enemies that want to kill us are simply a misguided potential voting group that can be reasoned with.

Some how, some way, that message needs to be understood by the American public before November.

I agree. I don’t believe for one minute that Clark was some lone ranger on this...and now Beers? Absolutely this was coordinated with the Obama campaign.

The good news is, the blowback from this will force Obama to forcefully sitance himself from those remarks. Wesley Clark and Rand Beers, who thought they were securing plum spots in the Obama administration, will soon find themselves with the same Greyhound treadmarks on their backs as Grandma, rev Wright, et al.

General Weasley Clark has been and is a major league pussy. A perfumed Prince that wouldn’t know a leader if he was following one.

He's also the guy that would have started WW-III with the Russians, if his Brit subordinate Commander had obeyed his orders to stop, by force, the Russians from taking over the airport in Pristina. Story here and here

I only hope that Sen. McCain has the opportunity and nerve to point that out to Sen. Obama - perhaps in a debate.

Don't hold your breath.

Still waiting to see enough blowback on Obambi — the fact that the Clark/Beers attacks were obviously coordinated with the timing of Obambi’s speech on patriotism today makes me suspect that it’s a very conscious campaign strategy by Axelrod and friends. Obambi tries to emerge above the fray, a “uniter” and “healer” (gag, puke) while surrogates from both campaigns duke it out. I don’t think we’ll be seeing any more disavowal from Obambi than what he’s already said. Meanwhile the remarks of Clark and Beers are out there in the media.

Agreed. The timing of the patriotism speech with the Clark/Beers tag team sideshow stinks.

Caught a small portion of a segment on CNN tonight with Anderson Cooper saying both Obama and Axelrod had disavowed Clark’s comments. James Carville was his sputtering, serpenty self, saying Clark had nothing to apologize for. Bill Bennett was his usual laid back self and told Carville to ask Axelrod to explain it to him.

"told Carville to ask Axelrod to explain it to him"

ROFL. That's a great line! Thanks, Bill Bennett! Interesting that Axelrod joined in the condemnation (I was imagining that he was pulling Clark's strings). Of course, it could all be posturing by Obama and Axelrod, giving Obambi his own "Sister Souljah" moment while also getting Clark and Rand Beers' trashy, vicious remarks into the MSM-stream. Even if Clark and Beers were speaking beyond the wishes of Obambi and Axelrod, there were surely emails flying around behind the scenes and Clark/Beers knew Obama was giving his big patriotism speech today, so the timing on THEIR part is obvious. Tear down McCain's military service/leadership just as Obambi is trying to pump up his own "patriotic" version of his candidacy. Demagogues are just too transparently vicious, even when they think they are clever.
