Obama's Dry Hole
The Wall Street Journal ^ | June 30, 2008 | Unatrributed

Posted on 06/29/2008 11:05:29 PM PDT by gpapa

"I want you to think about this," Barack Obama said in Las Vegas last week. "The oil companies have already been given 68 million acres of federal land, both onshore and offshore, to drill. They're allowed to drill it, and yet they haven't touched it – 68 million acres that have the potential to nearly double America's total oil production."

Wow, how come the oil companies didn't think of that?

Perhaps because the notion is obviously false – at least to anyone who knows how oil and gas exploration actually works. Predictably, however, Mr. Obama's claim is also the mantra of Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, John Kerry, Nick Rahall and others writing Congressional energy policy. As a public service, here's a remedial education.

Democrats are in a vise this summer, pinned on one side by voter anger over $4 gas and on the other by their ideological opposition to carbon-based energy – so, as always, the political first resort is to blame Big Oil. The allegation is that oil companies are "stockpiling" leases on federal lands to drive up gas prices. At least liberals are finally acknowledging the significance of supply and demand.

McCain and all the down ticket candidates coming up for election this cycle need to be pounding this over and over, and Anwar needs to be in the mix. Pelosi and Reid are on the wrong side of this issue and they know it. This is a gift that can keep on giving through Nov.; pray that it is used effectively.

As is usually the case with Democrat talking points, this one is just plain absurd. Maybe the best way to deal with their absurdity is to throw it back into their faces. If the oil companies are just "sitting on" these leases and not drilling, then why not go ahead and just open up drilling in the rest of the offshore areas and in ANWR - the oil companies will obviously do exactly the same thing that they are doing right now (according to the Democrats, that is), and not drill in those places, either.

It would be a win-win situation - the Republicans get what they want (opening up those areas to oil exploration), and the Democrats get what they want (if you believe their absurd claims, that it), namely no drilling in ANWR or offshore, and of course, higher gas prices...

I wouldn't hold my breath on the RNC doing anything with this at all.

Might interfere with the country club outings.

The more Obama talks the more he reveals himself a buffoon. Oil companies do not like to drill in areas that there is a low chance of finding oil.

They won't. Republican politicians are exceedingly stupid and spineless. Jellyfish...

That’s it? An incredibly lame DNC talking point that every lib from Pelosi to Carville has already beat to death? Good one, Obambi.

If my refrigerator is out of food I don’t stand there and say “More food won’t solve my problem”. I go to the store for more food! I usually think to myself “How stupid do these people think we are?”. But with this one I’m thinking “How did such stupid people end up running our country?”.

This was a start at educating the public, but it didn't go far enough. Dems are fond of saying it will “take 10 years, blah, blah, blah”. I heard an expert today, on FOX, say in the Gulf it would take perhaps 1 year, and off the East or West Coast 2 or 3 years before we could expect to see the impact of offshore oil.

The “69 million acres under lease” thing is so bogus, it is stupid even by Dem standards. It PROVES Democrats are either being blatantly, criminally, misleading or so ignorant of the oil business they should never have been placed in a position of power! I'm thinking it's probably both.

Democrat ignorance has always been legendary, now it's becoming criminal. We are being lied to in the name of political expediency.

What you ask requires a coordinated effort on the part of the Republicans (i.e. "talking points") as well as cooperation from the MSM. Unfortunately, those two criteria seem to be the exclusive property of the democrats.

I don’t believe the hype coming from either side. I don’t believe that oil companies are stupid enough to buy oil leases with nothing on them, not with todays siesmic technology or whatever it is. It may be to the governments benefit to have territories tested to see what they really do own to get the most money from. If time is the problem, let out a few more leases with a short time limit on them with a bond. Tell the winner produce in a certain time or loose your money. They do it all the time with other contracts.

Oil companies didn't lease property that has no oil. They leased property that has not been proven to have oil and are exploring for oil on these properties. To ask a company to drill on property where oil hasn't been found yet is absurd. Also, as has been pointed out, what are the Dems worried about then, why not just open up the land that has known reserves and then point out the fact the oil companies won't drill on it.

Also another point, the 68 million acres that supposedly is being sat on without drilling includes, Anwr and all other major oil deposits that CAN'T be drilled on due to political interference, mainly by Democrats and their green allies(read that as communists).

Recently in session a Republican challanged the democrats to point out one acre of land that actually had oil that the companies wouldn't drill on and the Dems could not point this out, because it simply isn't true.

Now you can believe the oil companies are stupid enough to actually set on oil reserves without drilling but I do not.

This is a winner for the Republicans, and they need to beat the Democrats over the head with it.

Iraq is a winner for the Republicans, and they need to beat the Democrats over the head with that, too.
