.- The civil rights watchdog website HazteOir.org reported this week that Spains Socialist Party and the Green Party of Catalonia have grated orangutans, chimpanzees, gorillas and other apes the inalienable right of companions of humanity.
The Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Fishing of the Spanish Congress approved a proposal that would press the Zapatero administration to support the Great Ape project in order to guarantee apes the right to life, liberty and the right not to be tortured. The final text of the proposal was drafted by Green party and Socialist lawmakers, with the more conservative Popular Party not participating.
Congress is pressing the Spanish government to declare its support for the Great Ape Project within the next four months as well as to promote it in the rest of the EU countries. The Great Ape Project aims to preserve and protect from abuse and death these genetic companions of humanity.
According to HazteOir.org, the four purposes of the project include the prohibiting of experimentation and research on apes that harms them and is of no benefit, the establishing of strict conditions for their captivity, the prohibiting of captivity for commercial or entertainment purposes and the establishing of serious penalties for cases of commerce, illegal captivity or abuse of apes.
Raquel Arias, a spokeswoman for the Popular Party, said she was embarrassed that Congress would try to make apes legally equal to humans while people everywhere are suffering from an economic crisis.
She said the project is an attempt grant apes the moral and legal protection that only human beings currently enjoy.
Joan Herrera of the Catalonia Green Party said apes are beings capable of knowing themselves and have wide and complex cognitive capacities.

Right to throw feaces at one another?
Isn’t this how the *Planet of the Apes* got started?
The radical, insane left is just that. They are fanatics that would not even stop at human engineering....
I was thinking the same thing. Imagine trying to deny an ape food and water, such deprivation leading to it’s death, twisted as that would be. Ok for Terri, wrong for apes. Something is not right here...
After I get my hearing aid checked out, I'm going to the city office to complain.

Mmmmm.
Grated orangutan.
My favorite.
I don't know if I'm hoping for the day or ruing how dreadful it will be.
Who says that “orangutans, chimpanzees, gorillas and other apes” even WANT to be companions of humanity?
Did these people watch “Planet of the Apes” one too many times?
I would HATE to see gorillas put in charge of military operations.
Spain has gone from a conservative catholic country to one that’s significantly to the left of Berkeley!!
Spain deserves a good mocking and I highly suggest that everybody watch “Barcelona”.
It’s a funny little romp that is not totally political but much of the comedy plot lines involve left/right politics and anti-American vs. EuroTrash stuff, especially the “red ants” skit.
A movie worth renting.
I enjoyed the end, where Spanish spouses enjoy the bucolic North Woods of the American bourgeoisie. How they were won over by the nerdy guys beats me.
Sadly, Magilla Gorilla isn’t around to enjoy these rights (unless he’s on TVLand).
Including the right to keep and bear arms?
There fixed that! It is time to call them what they are!
COMMUNISTS! ( All other names are mere Orwellian smokescreens.
I wish the Talking Pumpkin Heads ( Rush, Hannity, and OReilly) would start using the word that fits: COMMUNISM! They are such weenie ! They are afraid the Communists will accuse these wimpy, talk show Ichabods of "calling people names".
This doesn’t elevate the rights of apes, but degrades the rights of human beings. Liberal hysteria cheapens everything it touches; environmental catastrophies, bigotry, genocide, facism, hate, etc., are all just worn out, overused terms without meaning, just like ‘human rights’.
