California State Sen. Tim McClintock thinks Sen. John McCain should choose his former primary opponent, Fred Thompson for his running mate. McClintock made that statement at the Newsmaker Conference on May 24, hosted by The American Spectator and Americans for Tax Reform.
As a self-proclaiming, real conservative Republican, Sen. McClintock wishes for a return to Reagan conservatism in Congress and in the Oval Office. McClintock also expressed tepid enthusiasm for the GOPs presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain.
I was Fred Thompsons state-wide chairman, said McClintock. McCain was not my first choice. He was not my second. He was not my third, fourth or fifth choice either. We can see the difference between a fire and a fireman and I think you are going to see that reality take hold in coming days among conservatives in California.
McClintock insists his desire to return to traditional conservative principles is shared among his constituents. With strong convictions on issues including immigration, gay marriage, and the Iraq war, McClintock supports the old school values of the Reagan administration.

Ping?
And Duncan Hunter, who some Freepers still think walks on water, was a big spender with a lousy attendence record who could never get over 1% of the vote. So no candidate is perfect.
Go figure...
Fred Thompson has already said he’s not interested.
“Id rather have Fred on SCOTUS. Actually think he could get confirmed, too.”
It depends in part on which justice he would be replacing.
Although I supported his Presidential run, he'd be a terrible VP choice. A good VP choice will be someone that we can hope in for the future of Conservatism.
If Fred Thompson, although the only viable Conservative in the Primary, was roundly rejected mainly because he was seen as too tired and old, then how in the @ell will that perception DIMINISH by the year 2016???
And keep in mind, Fred was seen as "tired and old" in comparison to John Freakin' McCain!!!!
I like Fred, too. And the idea that he might help grab votes of ‘disgusted southern male democrats’ just sweetens the deal. And wow, Jindal. He has my vote, now. I’m not familiar with Palin, but will be sure to read up.
That is an understatement! There is NOTHING the left will not do to prevent a fifth Constitutionalist Justice from being confirmed.
I love Fred, but he’s 15+ years too old to begin a career on SCOTUS. I don’t think he’d accept the job, either.
There were two basic parts to McCain-Feingold. The SCOTUS shot down the issue ad provisions rendering them meaningless. Fred`s effort to limit Clinton-sytle soft money and to raise donation limits along with indexing contribution limits to inflation, were successful. Thanks to Fred, the limits for 2008 are $2,300 per individual. The subsequent creation of 527`s to offset limitations was an unforeseen result of CFR. Most conservatives would support lifting all contribution limits, including Fred Thompson. Just not gonna happen.
Btw, that amicus brief you piss ants brought up to discredit Fred, was red herring.
At least it would accurately reflect the condition of the GOP.
I see your point, but the Rodent Senators might not put up as much of a fight against an older nominee, particularly if he’d be replacing a liberal justice.
Ouch!!
Between Olmert and Livni, Zeke, you Israelis aren’t doing any better. Maybe quite a bit worse!
Yeah, but lol. It would be the Old and Older ticket, or the Sick and Sicker ticket. Hopefully Fred wants to keep his dignity and honor intact and would just say no. Suppose Mccain could always ask Bob "the stiff" Dole!
“It would be the Old and Older ticket, or the Sick and Sicker ticket.”
Actually the dumb and smarter ticket! But it wouldn’t sell.
McCain/Palin in 2008. Then make Fred Chief of the White House Staff and let him run everything.
Fred has already said “no” several times.
He’d better choose wisely, because it will determine whether or not many people will bother to vote. Obama *might* scare enough people to the polls (to vote GOP), but if McCain picks a senior citizen in questionable health or a brazen RINO, he’s pathologically self-destructive. There’s just no excuse for that, esp. with all of Obama’s baggage, thus the GOP will deserve all the scorn and dung that can be heaped upon it.
Absolutely. I didn’t make myself clear.
Ginsberg or Stevens, please.
Not a good plan.
