California State Sen. Tim McClintock thinks Sen. John McCain should choose his former primary opponent, Fred Thompson for his running mate. McClintock made that statement at the Newsmaker Conference on May 24, hosted by The American Spectator and Americans for Tax Reform.
As a self-proclaiming, “real” conservative Republican, Sen. McClintock wishes for a return to Reagan conservatism in Congress and in the Oval Office. McClintock also expressed tepid enthusiasm for the GOP’s presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain.
“I was Fred Thompson’s state-wide chairman,” said McClintock. “McCain was not my first choice. He was not my second. He was not my third, fourth or fifth choice either. We can see the difference between a ‘fire’ and a ‘fireman’ and I think you are going to see that reality take hold in coming days among conservatives in California.”
McClintock insists his desire to return to traditional conservative principles is shared among his constituents. With strong convictions on issues including immigration, gay marriage, and the Iraq war, McClintock supports the “old school” values of the Reagan administration.

Fred is too much taller than McCain to be his vice-president. Of course, Fred has more stature in non-physical ways that make him a bad choice for the RINO’s relic VP. Rule One in picking a VP, never pick someone who is smarter, more attractive, and more appealing than you are. Given that rule the Keating Five Guy’s choices are very very limited, neither Larry Craig nor Goober Graham would make the old geezer appear inadequate.
I have a less than tactful question for everyone. What happens if McCain should be incapacitated or pass away before the convention? After the convention but, before the election? Does anyone know?
Well, you get a Reagan once in a while, but then you have to put up with a Carter and a Clinton in the exchange. That’s a tough one.
I thought about this the other day- I am guessing it is because before Vietnam, if someone had political aspirations at all it was pretty much a requirement with the voters that they serve in the military. That thinking changed especially right after the Vietnam War when serving in the military was an unpopular thing to do with many people, even conservatives. I hope we will see politicians that are Veterans in the near future- especially in the case of Presidential candidates I still see it as a requirement, but as a plus for other candidates as well.
How about Larry Elder for VP?
Like it or not, Fred was the overwhelming choice of FReepers from the get-go, and for good reason --- his life long conservatism and his call for advancing federalism are what rightwingers like myself support.
Btw, counting Fred's "testing the waters" campaign phase, he was an unofficial-official candidate for about 10 months. In fact, Fred's candidacy started the beginning of the end for the Giuliani campaign --- which happened to be a major goal of Free Republic.
I’d rather have Fred on SCOTUS. Actually think he could get confirmed, too.
If it’s before the convention, the all bets are off. No delegates’ votes are somehow legally bound. (This year, it could get messy, but my guess is that the GOP would go with Romney, who — sorry, Huck — was the last “serious” contender vs. McCain. But anything could happen.)
If it’s after the convention, I’m not sure. I checked the RNC for rules about this and found nothing. Separately: A tricky issue is this: Different states have different deadlines for changing the ballots.
Fred was everyone’s second choice. If McCain would drop out and let Fred choose anybody else, it would be like a shot of adrenalin to the party.
Have you seen what McCain looks like on the stump? All that white hair, pale skin, and big dark wrap around sunglasses that look like what old geezers in the home wear when they go outside after cataract surgery. Good grief, it looks like the Republican party nominee was picked out of the Alzheimer’s wing. And the issue of his age is coming up again and again in the media and among voters. Add old, sick Thompson with his terminal cancer to the ticket and we’ve lost for certain.
The obvious choice is, as it’s always been, Mitt Romney. He should have been the nominee, but, unfortunately, aged Florida voters had the final say and they picked one of their own. And now he’s proving to be as disorganized and lackluster as he was in the primaries. We’re cooked.

The real stars for ‘12 are Jindal and Palin. Unbeatable, no matter who the rats put up.
But neither could have been run this cycle; one was just elected to clean up LA and the other one was pregnant.
McCain/Thompson COULD win and hold the presidency for Jindal and Palin. There are millions of disgusted southern male democrats who’d flock to that combo.
I’ll go door-to-door for Thompson, not McCain.

Alan Keyes had fire coming out of his ears, it didn’t get him nominated...
I’d be much relieved if McCain picked ole Fireless Down Tummy for a running mate. However, McCain never does what conservatives would do, and Fred says he’s not interested anyway.
But without Cheny there may not have been a Bush Presidency.
Second that, it would be a brilliant choice, so it probably won't happen, McCain is not running a brilliant campaign.
