The US Conference of Mayors on Monday passed a resolution calling for a phasing out of bottled water by municipalities and promoting the importance of public water supplies.

(snip)

The mayors, meeting in Miami, approved a resolution proposed by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom along with 17 other large-city mayors to redirect taxpayer dollars from bottled water to other city services.

Liberals are really stupid. Before they thought bottled water was cool. Now its yesterday's fad.

This latest version of eco-fascism is also happening in Canada. I’ve never bought bottled water (although I do filter tap water); so any bans won’t affect me directly. Nevertheless, I oppose such bans — and I support people’s right to spend their money as they chose (however foolishly. (Or, perhaps not foolishly — can municipalities guarantee that all of their tap water is “safe”, especially by today’s stringent standards?)

What? No initiative to combat alleged global warming? Our mayors are all talk, no action!

Why do they want to restrict people's choices? Sometimes we do need to drink bottled water! Dimwits!

Well, that’s an idea (drinking wine, that is).

Bottled water is great and easy to take around with you and really makes life nicer - plus I drink a lot more water than I used to, which is supposedly better for one’s health.

But anything that gets popular suddenly gets bad in the eyes of the left. Gavin Newsome is a dysfunctional leftist twirp, so who could be better as a leader for America’s Most Dysfunctional Mayors?

Easy to understand actually. They sell a product (tap water) and beverage companies sell a competing product (bottled water). They would prefer you buy their product so they do what they can to hobble the competition. Does anyone think there is a Coke machine at Pepsi’s headquarters?

I don't think they're banning bottled water, they're just saying that city government shouldn't provide it to city workers with taxpayer funds.

They were saying that the plastic bottles don't degrade in landfills, and also trap good air inside the bottles when they are put in the landfills.

Yep. Just like paper bags at the grocery store were baaaddd.

Now the plastic bags are bad, but no way are they going to go back to paper bags. Nope, before you know it, we will all have to provide our OWN bags. Yetch!

Why do they want to restrict people's choices?

My understanding is that the cities will stop buying bottled water for use by city employees at work. I guess they'll go back to using a water fountain, like in the olden days.

Seems silly for a group of mayors to gather and pass a resolution against something that probably shouldn't have been happening in the first place. While they're at it, I'm absolutely sure that there is a lot of other wasteful spending they could cut out.

I suppose it makes them feel important to pass a meaningless resolution. Can't they just stop buying the bottled water without making a big production out of it?

There’s only a limited number of things mayors can control. They can’t control crime, they can’t control urban decay, they can’t control lousy public schools. They can stop their employees from drinking bottled water.

Bottled water is pretty damned handy for our troops in the hell holes of Iraq and Afghanistan. Pretty handy to hand out to Iraqis as a little PR, as well as a health issue. Get the friggin’ government out of our business!

It’s time to SHOW a bunch of these people the door folks! Darn.

Bottle water is important if you live in a region prone to earthquakes or floods. It can save you life after an emergency, when public services collapse. It is also why everyone should keep emergency food stores, too.

Good luck in Minneapolis. I’d rather die of thirst than drink the foul tap water. It tastes like they just siphoned it out of the Ole Mississippi.

Read the durn article people! These snippets that are posted can be soooo misleading. It’s cities phasing out spending taxpayer’s dollars to buy bottled water for employees, etc.. It’s not about banning bottled water! Sheesh!
