Its been a while since a cougar killed anyone. They are still hunted and very wary. In the last decade Ive only seen one. Of course, there was one that was eyeing the playground at a local day care. It was treed and dispatched before it gathered up any snacks. I don't know where the he** you live but pumas kill people in CA regularly. It hasn't "been a while since a cougar killed someone" it has only been a few months. Try a web search, it is your friend. In CA we can't hunt them, they stalk and kill humans at a constant rate of about 2 or 3 per year, not a lot, unless you happen to be one of the 2 or 3.

I don't know where the he** you live New Mexico. I already knew this but you could have checked Slim's profile page.
Note, unlike Cali. they hunt them in NM. Maybe that is the difference.

It think it’s because we’re easier to peel than, say, a feral hog or deer.

I live in Tijeras, just a little former pueblo off RT. 66 in NM east of Albuquerque.
Of course I’m aware of the problems with cougars and coyotes in CA. (Hey, I wish they’d eat some CA transplants that moved here!) Where they’re “protected” they lose all fear of man. Here, even the coyotes move quick when they see somebody.

If you started shooting them you would find the attacks would die down. You see, you are just showing them that you are a legitimate part of their food chain. I guess Californians are just lower than cougars on that list.
